Kia EV9 in India - Premium Electric SUV
The Kia EV9 electric SUV corroborates the brand’s commitment towards sustainable mobility. The EV9 in particular, is geared towards the elites who want a luxury and colossal MPV with acres of space and the latest tech and convenience amenities. In essence, Kia wants to attract buyers away from the traditional luxury carmakers of the world. The electric powertrain lends an inherent instant torque, which translates to brisk acceleration despite its massive dimensions.
The EV9 reflects Kia’s “Opposites United” design philosophy, with bold proportions. The SUV combines a boxy, upright stance with smooth surfacing and aerodynamic elements. Kia focused on delivering a premium ownership experience. Another defining aspect of the EV9 is its ability to combine size and sustainability. Large SUVs are often associated with high emissions, but the EV9 challenges this notion by offering zero tailpipe emissions. In doing so, Kia positions the EV9 as a forward-looking alternative to traditional luxury SUVs.
The Kia EV9 price is a consequence of its CBU identity. The large electric SUV bears a price tag of Rs 1.30 Crore, ex-showroom. With this, it directly challenges the dominance of some of the most well-established high-end premium automobiles.
| Model | Engine | Mileage (ARAI) | Price (Ex-Showroom) |
| Kia EV9 GT Line | 99.8 kWh battery and dual electric motor; 384 PS / 700 Nm | 561 km (range per full charge) | ₹1.30 Crore |
The EV9’s pricing strategy highlights Kia’s intent to establish a strong foothold in the premium EV market. In fact, the EV9 goes up against many top opulent models from premium car marques across various international markets.
The Kia EV9 draws power from a massive 99.8 kWh battery pack. It supplies energy to two electric motors for an all-wheel-drive configuration. The combined power and torque output stands at 384 PS and 700 Nm, respectively. It propels the large electric SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in a matter of 5.3 seconds.
Built on Hyundai’s modular E-GMP platform, the EV9 benefits from fast charging capabilities and long range. The Korean auto giant claims a range of 561 km on a single charge, as per the ARAI MIDC method. Using an ultra-fast 350 kW DC charger and the 800V architecture, the battery goes from 10% to 80% in a matter of 24 minutes.
The electric motor delivers instant torque, which ensures smooth and effortless acceleration despite the SUV’s large size. The long range gives buyers peace of mind over long distances. Also, the driving dynamics are decent and the body roll is well contained. The only issue one might face while driving in congested city roads is the colossal size.
Kia India decided to launch the EV9 electric SUV in a single, fully-loaded GT-Line variant. With this, the buyers won’t need to choose any trims and they get access to all that Kia has to offer. This also demonstrates Kia’s confidence in its product to compete against the giants of the luxury EV space, not just in India, but across the globe.
The exterior design of the Kia EV9 is one of its main strengths. The SUV carries a commanding road presence, courtesy of its upright proportions, long wheelbase and sharp detailing. The front fascia of the EV9 features a closed-off grille, combined with Kia’s signature digital tiger face. The LED headlamps, encapsulated between the striking LED DRLs, are sleek and vertically stacked. The lighting elements are seamlessly integrated into the bodywork, enhancing the futuristic appeal. The sculpted bumper and sharp creases accentuate its rugged appeal.
Moving down the sides, the boxy silhouette of the EV9 becomes apparent and the roof rails add to the utilitarian aspect. The long wheelbase translates into a planted stance. Flush door handles, black side pillars, elegant 20-inch alloy wheels, prominent wheel arches with gloss black claddings and strong character lines contribute to its modern look. Despite its size, the design manages to appear clean and uncluttered.
Completing the exterior profile are the vertically oriented LED taillamps, a roof-mounted spoiler with a high-mount stop light, an adventurous skid plate underneath the bumper and a clean boot lid. Overall, the EV9’s exterior design successfully balances futuristic aesthetics with SUV ruggedness.
The interior of the Kia EV9 highlights the tech-savvy components, along with premium sustainable materials for the upholstery. The availability of three rows of seating ensures that large families can travel for long journeys with utmost ease and comfort. Despite the three rows, the boot capacity is a decent 333 litres, while the additional 52-litre frunk can hold a small duffel bag too.
The dashboard layout is clean and minimalistic with a Trinity display for infotainment, HVAC controls and driver’s instrument cluster. High-quality materials, soft-touch surfaces and eco-friendly upholstery options elevate the premium feel of the cabin.
Being a premium MPV, seating comfort is a key priority in the EV9. The seats are well-cushioned and supportive, ensuring comfort over long journeys. The second-row passengers enjoy generous legroom and headroom and the third row is usable even for adults.
In terms of technology and convenience, the EV9 offers a host of modern features, including Meridian Hi-Fi audio system with 14 speakers, head-up display, connected car technology, 3-zone automatic climate control and premium audio systems. Even the safety prowess is enhanced with Level 2 ADAS and a slew of passive safety features like 10 airbags.
Some of the features highlight include Touchscreen for Rear Seat Massage, Second-row Heating and Ventilation, Large Armrest for Second Row with Storage, Next-gen Kia Connect with 100+ Features, Smartphone Wireless Charger with Cooling Function, Dual Sunroof with Suede Headlining, Steering Wheel with Memory Function and 18-way Driver Power Seat with Memory Function
The amount of active and passive safety kit on the Kia EV9 is quite impressive. The electric SUV is equipped with a comprehensive suite of active and passive safety features. Some of these include 10 airbags, electronic stability control, downhill brake control, Level 2 ADAS with 27 features, front, side and rear sensors, multi collision brake, blind spot collision warning, emergency stop signal, rear cross traffic collision warning, safe exit warning, driver attention warning, high beam assist and much more.
The integration of advanced technology extends beyond safety, with features like connected car tech, over-the-air updates and intelligent energy management systems further enhancing the ownership experience.
The Kia EV9 electric SUV is priced at Rs 1.30 Crore, ex-showroom. This is clearly the luxury car territory. At this price point, its biggest rival is the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, which offers higher brand value and a more opulent cabin for a slightly higher price. Unlike the EQS, which is assembled in India, the EV9 comes as a complete import, which leads to a higher duty. This tilts the value-for-money factor towards its competitor.
As is the case with every vehicle, even the Kia EV9 has its fair share of advantages and disadvantages. Note that these could be subjective for a wide range of customers. Still, the table below highlights these two aspects of the large electric SUV.
| Pros | Cons |
| Bold and Futuristic Design that won’t look outdated for many years to come | Premium Pricing due to high import duties and taxation hits this car’s VFM proposition. |
| Spacious and practical cabin with a luxurious second row and many modern features | Large size could be a problem for city-dwellers, especially in traffic |
| Strong performance, despite the size and the weight of this electric vehicle. | Doesn’t have the brand image of its German rival as Kia is a more mainstream brand. |
The Kia EV9 makes a lot of sense for those who want to experience a new player at this price point. Kia has been a popular name in the mass market segment across the globe for decades. However, the EV9 represents the best it has to offer. As a consequence, it has gone to extreme lengths to ensure that it doesn’t miss out on anything when compared to the premium auto giants.
The striking bold appearance, availability of top-notch tech and convenience amenities, use of high-quality materials, practicality of 3 rows, rugged performance, active and passive safety amenities are some of the top reasons why influential personalities could opt for it. Also, the road presence of this large electric SUV definitely has the potential to make heads turn, regardless of where you are.
