Outline

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon has been ruling the luxury SUV space for long, and while there are competitors like the Land Rover Defender and the humble Toyota Land Cruiser, the appeal of a G-Class often outshines. Latest media reports suggest that Mercedes’ arch-rival BMW is developing a rival to the G-Class, with intentions to shake things up in the segment. Things are gonna get a lot more fun, aren’t they? Here’s what we know so far.

BMW has never had anything that could directly take on the rugged Mercedes-Benz G-Class, but recent media reports suggest that it is working on one such SUV that could be based on the next generation BMW X5 platform. While the current X5 gets an off-road package in certain global markets, it is nowhere seen nearly as capable as the G.

The upcoming BMW’s G-Class rival is being seen as a successor to the BMW XM, which has been quite a failed product for the German carmaker. Internally codenamed as the G74, the upcoming SUV is expected to debut with an internal combustion engine, though it might also get an electric powertrain down the line.

BMW’s G-Class rival launch timeline

The G-Wagon rival is likely to make its debut sometime in 2029. We might see some concept iterations in the near future though.  To stand across the G-Wagon, the BMW SUV ought to get heavy-duty off-road machinery and characteristics such as locking differentials, long suspension travel, high ground clearance, and suitable approach, breakover, and departure angles.
