Meghalaya, a state with more than 11 districts, has established over 12 RTOs to assist its population of over 38.16 lakh people in vehicle registrations, driving licence allotment, and more. The RTOs in Meghalaya function in accordance with the Indian Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 and help ensure these rules and regulations are followed across the state.
A vehicle may only be driven or permitted to be driven in public areas in Meghalaya after it has been registered by the designated authority in accordance with section 39 of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988. Registration fees and any hypothecation fees (if a loan has been secured from a bank) must be paid. A one-time road tax covering a duration of 10 years must be paid, followed by a tax payment every 5 years thereafter. The road tax amount is based on the sale price of the vehicle for all cars. The validity for vehicle registration or fitness for new vehicles is 15 years, after which it can be renewed every 5 years based on the vehicle’s roadworthiness.
