Chandigarh, with around 13.6 lakh residents, has set up 7 Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to facilitate vehicle registrations, provision of learners and permanent driving licences, and other RTO services. The RTOs in Chandigarh are mandated to ensure adherence to the guidelines stipulated in the Indian Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 throughout the state.
Chandigarh has two separate bodies that take care of private and commercial vehicle registrations. The Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA) looks after private vehicle registrations, while the State Transport Authority (STA) is involved in commercial vehicle registrations. To register a private vehicle in Chandigarh, the following steps must be carried out:
Step 1: Acquire the file needed from the RLA File Sale Counter
Step 2: Complete and attach all the required Forms/Documents as per the Checklist
Step 3: Get your Vehicle Inspection (Passing) conducted by the Motor Vehicle Inspector
Step 4: Obtain a Token from the RC counter at the concerned RLA Office
Step 5: Submit your complete file & fees at the concerned counter (as per your Token No.) and collect your Fee Receipt
Step 6: Go to the High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) counter. Deposit the fee for your HSRP and collect your HSRP Authorization Slip & Fee Slip
Step 7: Get your High Security Registration Plate affixed on your vehicle on the assigned fitment date from your respective RLA Office
Step 8: Your Registration Certificate (RC) will be dispatched to you via Speed Post, and delivered at your given address
