The Volkswagen Tera is the brand’s upcoming SUV that is going to soon be launched in Brazil. Why are we covering it? That’s because it is built on the same platform as the new Skoda Kylaq, and it might also be launched in India.
To set some context, the Kylaq is Skoda’s new sub-compact SUV in India, that has been launched at a starting price of Rs 7.89 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It competes with other SUVs in India such as the Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
Apart from the MQB-A0 platform, the Tera will also share the 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine with the Kylaq, as per media reports from Brazil. It might be a bit longer than the Kylaq though, due to the absence of any sub 4 metre specific taxation laws in Brazil.
The upcoming Tera has been spied in Argentina, and the spy shots give us some hints about the design of the SUV. The front face of the test mule makes it instantly recognisable as a Volkswagen, even with the blacked-out badge. The rear features a sloping surface, with a pronounced character line in the middle. The wheels look like they’ve been picked from an EV prototype.
While VW India had earlier refuted any plans of launching a new sub-compact SUV in India due to a poor response in case of the Polo Cross and Ameo, as well as to avoid further overlapping of products with its sister brand Skoda, latest reports suggest that VW India is now considering the Tera for India as well.
If launched, the Tera shall be tailored to meet Indian regulations and market conditions, notably reducing its length to make it fall in the sub 4 metre segment. Don’t expect the Tera to be here before the end of 2025.
