Toyota is reportedly working on a new SUV, which will sit below the Toyota Fortuner in the Japanese carmaker’s lineup. It is likely to be built on the IMP platform, which also underpins the Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Hilux, and Innova Crysta. (Images used are for representational purpose)
The upcoming SUV from Toyota might be the spiritual successor of the iconic Toyota FJ Cruiser. It is likely to feature a similar boxy shape and be slightly smaller in size than the Toyota Fortuner.
The production of Toyota’s new ‘rugged’ SUV is said to begin from November this year. Reports suggest that the new Toyota SUV will first go on sale in Thailand, followed by debuts in other markets later.
The SUV can feature the diesel engines from 2.4-litre to 2.8-litre of displacement. There could also be the 2.7-litre petrol engine on offer, which is seen on the Toyota Fortuner.
While there are no reports regarding Toyota’s plans to launch its upcoming SUV in India, it would be sensible for the brand to do so, following the rising popularity of SUVs in the country, and Toyota’s well-established brand name amongst the Indian masses.
Toyota has a vast portfolio of cars in India, including Toyota Innova Crysta, Innova Hycross, Fortuner, Legender, Hilux, Toyota Camry, Vellfire and Land Cruiser 300. It also offers products like the Glanza, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Toyota Rumion and Urban Cruiser Taisor as part of its partnership with Suzuki.
