Toyota has officially announced that it will launch its own version of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki eVX electric SUV. While this doesn’t really come as a surprise, it is now official that we’ll get to see a Toyota eVX too, albeit with a new name.
Both versions of the eVX (Toyota’s and Suzuki’s) will be made at the Suzuki Motor plant at Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The OEMs will export these SUVs to international markets, and will also sell them in India.
Suzuki Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation have joined hands to form a global alliance with the motive of sharing technology, platforms, information, as well as products. Badge engineered Maruti Suzukis sold as Toyotas in India and vice versa are also due to this very alliance.
The eVX is underpinned by a platform that has been jointly developed by Suzuki, Toyota, and Diahatsu. Cars such as the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder (and the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara) have also been jointly developed by the two Japanese companies.
While neither Toyota nor Maruti Suzuki have released any specifications for the eVX, apart from the platform and dimensions, Toyota says that there will be both 2WD and 4WD variants of the electric SUV.
On a side note, Suzuki is going to unveil the production-ready version of the eVX on November 4, 2024 at Milan, Italy. India debut of the same will take place at the Bharat Mobility Expo in January next year.
