The Hilux is basically a pickup version of the popular Toyota Fortuner SUV and is available in multiple configurations across markets over the globe.
Toyota UK has updated the Hilux, adding a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to the 2.8-litre diesel engine that is also seen on the India-spec truck.
The Hilux Hybrid 48V comes with a 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack that is charged by a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor-generator, which, in turn, is driven by the engine. The hybrid setup reduces the idling speed of the engine from 720rpm to 600rpm, and produces 16PS of additional power and 65Nm of additional torque.
The updated UK-spec Hilux also becomes the first Hilux to get Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select System that adjusts functions like drive force, suspension and hydraulic brake pressure to suit varied driving conditions. There are six selectable settings — Sand, Mud, Rock, Dirt, Deep Snow, and Auto.
India gets the Hilux in the same configuration as seen on the UK-spec model, which is a double-cab layout with a 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine that produces 204PS of maximum power and 500Nm of peak torque. The updated mild-hybrid setup is also soon expected to make its way to India.
Toyota is likely to debut the mild-hybrid-diesel setup in India on the Fortuner, followed by the Hilux. Both the Fortuner and the Hilux share the same powertrain. The carmaker is yet to confirm the same.
