NHAI or National Highway Authority of India is the body responsible for constructing and maintaining national highways across India. NHAI is also responsible for collecting tolls and instructing contractors to collect tolls from users.
Every year, NHAI revises the fee structures for tolls based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI).
The authority has announced this year’s tax hike, which amounts to around 4-5% across national highways in India. The exact change in tax varies from one section to another.
The said toll hike has been put into effect from April 1, 2025. Every year, the revision in price comes into effect on this date.
There are around 855 toll plazas on national highways and expressways in India at present. Out of these, 675 are funded by motorists, and the remaining 180 are operated by private contractors under license.
