Tesla is making fast moves as the carmaker waits for homologation approval for the Model Y and Model 3 models. These models are expected to be the first ones to be launched in India.
Tesla’s first showroom will open in Mumbai at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). It is expected that the second showroom will be opened in Delhi.
The Tesla Model 3 is offered in three variants internationally: the Performance with a 528 km range, the Long Range AWD with a 629 km range, and the Rear Wheel Drive with a 513 km range.
In the international market, the Tesla Model Y is available with the Standard Range RWD and Long Range dual-motor AWD options. The Standard Range offers a 466 km range, while the Long Range delivers a 551 km range.
Last year, the Indian government made changes to its import duty, reducing it from 70-100% to 15% for the next five years on passenger EVs. For imports, carmakers can bring in a maximum of 40,000 units, with up to 8,000 EVs allowed per year.
Tesla Motors set up its subsidiary, Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited, in Bengaluru in January 2021. However, due to high taxes, the company paused its plans. After the govt made more favourable policy changes, Tesla decided to move forward. There are also talks that Tesla is aiming for a 0% tax, but no approval has come from the govt yet.
