The Maruti Suzuki Jimny will soon be discontinued in Europe. This is primarily due to the stricter emission norms that have been put into place in many countries. The Jimny contributes significantly to the brand’s average fleet emission values.
Suzuki has launched a special edition of the Jimny to mark the departure of its iconic vehicle from European markets. The Suzuki Jimny Horizon features a retro-themed body kit and is limited to just 900 examples.
After 2021, Europe got only the commercial variants of the Suzuki Jimny, owing to the emission norms. These variants came with just two seats and three-doors, unlike the ones sold in India.
The Suzuki Jimny was sold with Suzuki’s 1.5-litre K-series engine. This four-cylinder engine produces an output of 102PS and 138Nm of peak torque. The Jimny Horizon Edition will only come paired with a manual gearbox.
The discontinuation of the Suzuki Jimny in Europe is likely to pave the way for greener hybrid versions of the Suzuki Jimny. Suzuki is likely to launch a mild-hybrid or a strong-hybrid version of the Jimny in Europe soon, with an all-electric Jimny under development too.
The Jimny, sadly, hasn’t been able to attract many buyers in India, selling in three-digit numbers over the past few months. On the contrary, the Jimny rival Mahindra Thar is selling in great numbers, clocking close to 5,800 units monthly in 2024.
