There have been rumours, reports and speculations for weeks about Ford Motor Company’s re-entry in India until now. Ford has confirmed that it will soon be making a comeback to the Indian shores.
Ford signed a Letter of Intent with the Government of Tamil Nadu last week to restart manufacturing at their Chennai plant after a hiatus of two years.
Ford currently owns an engine manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat. It also continues to provide after sales services to its existing customers as it sees India as a crucial market for its global operations and expansion.
Ford said that it will manufacture cars for exports at the Chennai plant, though the particular models to be manufactured shall be revealed at a later date.
While Ford doesn’t have any immediate plans to sell its cars in the Indian market, it might bring some of its premium offerings to India such as the Mustang, Ranger and Everest SUV.
Ford India currently employs around 12,000 people in the state, with plans to recruit 2,500-3,000 more employees facilitating its expansion.
