Despite its smaller size, the sporty mass-market hatchback segment in India is gaining significant attention, especially following the launch of the new Tata Altroz Racer. Featuring a range of cosmetic and mechanical updates, the Tata Altroz Racer represents Tata’s renewed effort to appeal to automotive enthusiasts after the unsuccessful JTP edition models in India. Having said this, the Altroz Racer seems to be an interesting rival in the segment and gives competition to the Hyundai i20 N Line, a car which is still loved by many for its sporty looks, aggressive powertrain options and a lovely exhaust note. But shall you pick the Altroz Racer over the i20 N Line? Here is a Tata Altroz Racer Vs Hyundai i20 N Line comparison that will help you decide better.

Tata Altroz Racer Vs Hyundai i20 N Line - Design And Dimensions

While there is no major difference between the Tata Altroz and the Hyundai i20 N Line in terms of the exterior dimensions, the design and styling make them poles apart. While the Hyundai i20 N Line maintains an elegant and sharp look with sporty red accents, twin-tip exhaust and restyled bumpers with a new grille complementing its character, the Altroz Racer on the other hand goes bold and loud, especially with its dual-tone paint scheme with blacked-out bonnet and white racing stripes. What is also new in the Altroz Racer is a larger rear spoiler and three colour options - Atomic Orange, Avenue White and Pure Grey.

Tata Altroz Racer Vs Hyundai i20 N Line - Engine, Gearbox and Performance

The Tata Altroz Racer gets a more powerful, 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine that puts out 120hp and 170Nm of maximum torque while the Hyundai i20 N Line on the other hand gets a 1-litre turbo petrol motor capable of delivering 120hp and 172Nm of peak torque. While the Altroz Racer only gets a 6-speed manual gearbox, the Hyundai i20 N Line also gets a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission along with a six-speed manual unit.

Having said this, while the new 1.2-litre motor offered with Altroz Racer boasts a similar power as the Hyundai i20 N Line’s 1.0-litre turbo engine, it does have some vibrations and gets vocal as the RPMs rise. The Hyundai’s unit on the other hand is refined and has a strong mid-range punch. Save for a new sportier exhaust setup, the Altroz Racer gets no mechanical upgrades over the Standard Altroz. The Hyundai i20 N Line however boasts a number of changes including a retuned suspension setup, a sportier exhaust note and reworked steering dynamics that helps it offer a better driving experience over the standard models.

Verdict - Which one should you buy?

The Tata Altroz has consistently been a standout product, and I have personally loved its driving dynamics and chassis characteristics. Its settled ride, impressive high-speed stability, and five-star safety rating have always been strong points. With the launch of the new Racer edition, the Altroz now features a more powerful powertrain, which might interest many buyers. Although I find the Tata Altroz Racer's design a bit too bold, many will appreciate its sporty exterior, dual-tone colours, and racing stripes, which set it apart from the standard model.

The Hyundai i20 N Line, on the other hand, is a car that continues to be a perfect family hatchback with sporty upgrades that are enough to keep a wide grin on the driver’s face. It looks clean, sounds better, and has a more refined powertrain that gives it a slight edge over the Altroz Racer. What makes it even better for some is a slick-shifting 7-speed DCT automatic transmission, which the Altroz Racer lacks. However, all this comes at a premium price compared to the Altroz Racer, as the higher-spec versions of the i20 are priced significantly higher.
