Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT fuel efficiency tested — What mileage did we get?
- 1We achieved more efficiency than displayed via tank-to-tank method
- 2Swift AMT more efficient than the manual transmission
- 3Maruti Swift AMT is now cheaper by Rs 5,000 than before
Putting out the obvious, Maruti Suzuki cars are one of the most efficient in their respective classes — be it the entry-level Alto to the flagship Invicto hybrid. If there is one thing Maruti Suzuki does perfectly, that’s eking out maximum out of every drop of fuel. Just to reaffirm that, we recently took the 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift for an in-depth fuel efficiency test to find out what mileage the popular Swift hatchback returns with its new Z-series 3-cylinder petrol engine. 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT fuel efficiency tested
In order to conduct an error-free test, we followed the standard tank-to-tank method. We filled the tank to the brim, following two auto cuts, and also ensured correct tyre pressure at all four corners. With the trip meter reset, we started the test in the dense city traffic of Gurgaon. With the speed averaging between 20-40kmph, the indicated fuel efficiency touched 17kmpl upon completing around 40 km within city confines. Through this test, we aimed to mimic the realistic driving conditions a prospective Swift owner would be tackling.
It is worth mentioning that throughout the test, the AC was set between 22-24 C with one driver and co-passenger on-board. Under city confines, while offering impressive fuel efficiency, the Swift also offered a convenient driving experience. The new 1.2-litre Z-series petrol engine, by the virtue of being a 3-cylinder engine, was perceived with raised eyebrows. After all, the Swift was known for its sheer performance and refinement. After driving the new Swift well over a week, I can affirm that the Swift continues to carry those positives ahead. The performance inside the city is impressive, thanks to the low-end grunt offered by the engine. While the refinement has seen a dip over the older Swift iterations, the new engine is actually one of the most refined 3-cylinder engines on the market.

Another impressive element of the new Swift is its exemplary AMT transmission. You can vouch me for this — the Swift AMT is actually the best AMT-equipped vehicle on sale in the market. The AMT found in the new Swift is by far the most sophisticated in the way it has been tuned. The gear shifts are timed perfectly and they also adapt to the way you drive, with no fixed shift points. The transmission quickly, and more importantly, silently, moves up the gears and settles at low RPMs, thereby ensuring great fuel efficiency.
As we exited the city confines, we set on the Dwarka expressway to mimic highway driving that you would get on with your new Swift. Needless to say, the fuel efficiency readout quickly moved up and at the end of our test showed well above 21kmpl. On the highways, the Swift felt at ease thanks to enhanced tuning of the powertrain. Maruti Suzuki has tweaked the gearing and made them taller, which enables it to cruise effortlessly at 100kmph @ 2500rpm, which is lower than the earlier Swift, thereby ensuring better fuel efficiency too.
After driving the new Swift for over 40km in the city and around 70km on the highway, we tried to mimic a driving cycle of someone commuting intercity for office or any work related trip. We drove the Swift AMT for 124km and stopped at the same fuel pump we began the test from. Upon refuelling, the fuel tank took 5.21 litres of fuel. We realised that the Swift AMT actually delivered more than the displayed fuel efficiency. While the displayed fuel efficiency was a smidge over 21kmpl, it returned a fuel efficiency of 23.80kmpl.

Needless to say, the Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT fuel efficiency turned out to be pretty impressive. We believe that the Swift AMT, which claims a fuel efficiency of 25.75kmpl, can actually be achieved with a light right foot. Even if we throw the claimed fuel efficiency figure out of the window, 23.80kmpl fuel efficiency in mixed driving conditions is no less than splendid. Furthermore, comfortable seats, sorted suspension and a well-tuned AMT make the new Swift a very admirable city roundabout car, which can also do occasional highway runs without breaking a sweat.
