Outline

Does it make sense to compare the MG Windsor EV to the MG Comet EV? Yes. Let me explain you why. The upfront cost of the new Windsor EV starts at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), thanks to the Battery-as-a-Service scheme introduced by JSW MG Motor India, while the Comet is priced between Rs 6.99 lakh and Rs 9.53 lakh. The delta in price is considerable for the upgrades that the Windsor has to offer over the Comet. Here’s a story elaborating the same.

MG Comet EV - The use case

Let’s first try to figure out who the customer of the Comet EV is. The Comet is positioned as a second car for its customers, who are looking for a small but premium four-wheeler to navigate through the city mess. The Comet lets you zip through traffic as if you were on a motorcycle (please do that safely), and is super convenient to park.

MG Windsor EV - Where does it fit in?

The Windsor EV offers a lot more space than the Comet does with a marginal increase in cost. Don’t get me wrong, the Comet is quite spacious in itself due to the brilliant packaging done by the designers, but you cannot sit three adults at the back, which you can in the Windsor. Plus the reclining feature that has been projected as the highlight of the Windsor EV that pushes the comfort factor a few notches up. Not to forget the massive 604 litres of boot space on offer, obviously with the seats not reclined all the way back.

What about the running cost?

The Comet requires chump change to run. You just have to pay for the charging. Let’s assume that you charge the Comet at your house or your office in Delhi, and use a public charger occasionally. The cost of running the Comet would roughly come out to be around a rupee per kilometre. For the Windsor EV, you’ll need to pay an additional Rs 3.5 per kilometre to MG India for leasing the battery. That doesn’t sound like a bad deal, honestly. Moreover, it’s more convenient than the closest alternative, a CNG-powered hatchback. The small 38kWh battery and the Battery-as-a-Service scheme add to the affordability quotient. All-in-all, it should make sense for most to upgrade to the MG Windsor EV.

MG Comet pros – Some still outdo the Windsor

Well, we aren’t suggesting you to outrightly reject the idea of buying an MG Comet EV. The car is brilliant in its own right. It might be more practical if you don’t need to ferry more than two or three people, or need it to make quick runs to the grocery store. The Comet is a good fit as a second car for your intra-city commute. But, the Windsor EV can be considered even as your primary car, which the Comet, alas, cannot. This is however, subject to the assumption that you do not clock a lot of distance everyday as the car would practically give you a range of around 250 kilometres, give or take a few.

Is the Windsor EV really the ‘better’ car then?

Better has its own connotations. If you’re looking for a car with more space, more comfort, a couple more ‘features’, and a big glass panel above your head, then the new MG Windsor EV should be the better car for you. If your primary objective is to get yourself a literal pocket-rocket for your quick grocery runs through the city’s jam-packed lanes, then the MG Comet EV is the better car for you. You pick your own ‘better’ one. On a side note, stay tuned to CARS24 New Cars; our review of the 2024 MG Windsor EV is going to be live soon!
