Rising Strong: The Art of Failing Forward

Autonauts,

At CARS24, we face challenges head-on every day. We push boundaries, innovate, and strive for excellence. Yet, amid our successes, we have to confront the inevitability of failure. Society often shuns failure, seeing it as a flaw rather than a sign of courage. But we understand that failure, though tough to handle, is a crucial part of our journey.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.
-Winston Churchill

The Tough Reality of Failure

Failure is undeniably one of the hardest things to face. Accepting defeat, acknowledging missed opportunities, and coming to terms with setbacks require immense strength. It’s no wonder that many avoid failure altogether, choosing the comfort of the known over the uncertainty of the unknown. But avoiding failure means avoiding growth. If we don't play, we don't lose—but we also don't win.

Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fail.
-Confucius

Why Society Avoids Failure

Society tends to look down upon failure because it is painful and challenging to process. The emotional toll can be overwhelming, leading to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. It’s a natural human instinct to avoid pain, and thus, many shy away from situations where failure is a possibility. However, this avoidance stifles innovation and personal development.

Embracing the Struggle

I have been trying to train my mind to view failure as a learning opportunity for years. Around my desk, I have posters like Theodore Roosevelt’s “The Man in the Arena” speech and the “Why do we fall?” quote from *Batman Begins*. And yet, when failure hits, it's only then you realise that quotes aren't helping with the sinking feeling. Failure can linger in our minds, causing us to question our abilities and decisions. It’s there with you 24/7, from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep. It can take weeks to process, during which time we experience highs of optimism and lows of despair. Even activities we love, like exercise, can fall by the wayside. But gradually, we find the strength to rise again, to put the failure behind us, and to focus on our weaknesses and areas for improvement.

I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.
-Michael Jordan

The Power of Persistence

The key to overcoming failure is persistence. It is not a sudden burst of energy that lifts us, but a gradual, consistent effort to move forward. We must try to not let failure lower our confidence. Instead, we should see it as a crucial part of our growth process. Each time we rise after a fall, we become stronger and more resilient.

Fall seven times, stand up eight.
-Japanese Proverb

Sometimes, failure can last a long time. The struggle can stretch into years. Look at Walt Disney, who faced bankruptcy and was told he lacked creativity before creating the Disney empire, or Michael Jordan, who was cut from his high school basketball team but went on to become one of the greatest athletes of all time. But that's where it’s important to keep hanging in there. Life can be topsy-turvy, but we’ve got to take it on the chin. We’ve got to accept what we’ve got and still keep trying.

A Message to all the CARS24 Autonauts

To my CARS24 family, let’s embrace failure as an essential part of our journey. Let’s not shy away from the pain and hardship it brings, but rather see it as a crucible in which our true strength is forged. Each setback is an opportunity to learn, introspect, and grow.

We’re in this together, and together, we will face every challenge that comes our way. Let’s celebrate our small wins, support each other through the lows, and keep our eyes on the big goals that drive us. Remember, it’s not about how many times we fail, but how many times we get back up and keep moving forward.

Failure doesn’t mean we have to win at the same thing again. Sometimes, it means taking on a new challenge, exploring a different path, and finding success in a new arena.

When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.
-Alexander Graham Bell

The Beauty of Highs and Lows

Highs and lows are what make life interesting. As the song "Let Her Go" by Passenger says, "You only know what the highs are like when you have felt the lows." Each failure we experience enriches our appreciation of success. It’s the contrast that gives life its depth and meaning.

Accepting failure helps. Your loved ones won’t judge you. People who believe in you, their faith is not shaken. Yes, there will be naysayers, but that’s okay. You failed after all. But look for strength in the people who believe in you. They can help you correct your flaws and give you confidence. Over the years, I have gone back to so many people, new and old, to help me. There is always something to learn. They can’t travel the road with you, but they are there for you, and it does help.

All the adversity I've had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me.
-Walt Disney

Failure is not the enemy; it is a mentor. It teaches us resilience, patience, and the value of hard work. By embracing failure, we unlock our true potential and pave the way for remarkable achievements. Let’s be the team that not only dreams big but also dares to fail, learns from it, and rises stronger every time.

Together, we will turn our failures into stepping stones for success. We will fight, we will persevere, and we will emerge victorious. After all, the pain and hardship are just parts of the process, making us stronger and more resilient.

A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.
-Albert Einstein

Here’s to embracing failure and turning it into our greatest ally in the pursuit of excellence.
