Will the Hyundai Inster EV come to India? Hyundai EV plan details
- 1Hyundai Inster EV India launch unlikely
- 2Kia Syros-based Hyundai EV could be on the cards
- 3Upcoming made-in-India EVs will be a mix of born electric and ICE-derived platforms
As per a recent report, Hyundai India has laid out three new electric cars that are said to be launched in the coming years. It is worth mentioning that the upcoming electric Hyundai models do not include the Creta Electric as its launch is slated to take place at the Bharat Mobility Global Auto Expo 2025. The question is, what EVs Hyundai will bring to the Indian market and will the Inster EV–the smallest EV from Hyundai—make it to the Indian market? We try to break down Hyundai India’s EV strategy in this article below.
Will the Inster EV make it to India?
Let’s clear the air around the Inster EV as it has been expected to make its entry to the Indian market. Logically, the Inster EV is not the right fit for a market as competitive as India. While a quirky urban mobility solution like the MG Comet EV could find some relevance still, if the Inster EV gets launched in India, it will be perceived as a rival to the Tata Punch EV and the Citroen e C3, both of which are highly practical and affordable cars.

The Hyundai Inster EV, on the other hand, is targeted as a lifestyle vehicle and is very popular in markets like South Korea. However, if you take a quick look at its dimensions, the Inster EV measures 1610mm in width and 1633mm in height, which compared to the Tata Punch EV, are compromising. The only dimension in which the Inster EV excels is its wheelbase, standing at 2580mm. Bringing the Inster EV when the Exter is already on sale in the Indian market would be wise when it comes to product strategy from Hyundai’s part. As a result, the Inster EV India launch has very small likelihood to come into existence.
Hyundai India EV plans
Moving away from the Inster EV, which as per our educated guess, is not part of Hyundai India’s EV plans, let’s take a look at the possible contenders. The reports claim that the upcoming three electric vehicles will be made in India, boasting a mix of both ICE-derived and born electric platforms. We have also understood that Hyundai is considering multiple segments and bodystyles, thanks to the benefits in terms of taxation in the case of electric vehicles.

Now speaking of the possible contenders, we expect Hyundai to have a stablemate to the Kia Syros EV, the ICE version of which was recently announced in the Indian market. The Kia Syros EV is already confirmed for India launch in 2026 and its Hyundai alternative is highly anticipated. Since we are not aware of the launch timeline of upcoming Hyundai EV models, the next-gen Venue and next-gen Grand-i10 Nios are also in contention.
