Volkswagen has hit a new milestone with its Taigun SUV, reaching 1 lakh sales, combining both domestic and export numbers. The Taigun first hit the Indian market on September 23, and as of the end of August, 67,140 units were sold locally, according to SIAM's wholesale figures. In terms of exports, 32,742 units have been shipped over the years. Plus, more units were added to the tally with sales in early September. Let’s take a closer look at the domestic sales of the VW Taigun over the past three years, which reveals some interesting patterns. In the first financial year after its launch, FY2022, the Taigun sold 16,889 units, based on wholesale numbers reported by SIAM. This was a solid start, showcasing the vehicle's initial popularity. The following year, FY2023, saw sales peak at 21,736 units, reflecting strong consumer interest and effective marketing. 

 

In the financial year that ended in March 2024, sales decreased slightly to 20,485 units, indicating a minor drop that could suggest shifting buyer preferences. In FY2025, the decline became more pronounced, with sales dropping 3.29% to 8,030 units. Overall, from FY2022 to FY2025, Taigun's total domestic sales reached 67,140 units, highlighting its journey through both success and challenges.

Export sales performance over the last three years

The export sales of the VW Taigun have shown a remarkable upward trend over the years. In the financial year 2022 (FY22), the Taigun saw 2,851 units sold internationally. This number increased significantly in FY23, with exports reaching 7,958 units, indicating a growing demand for the vehicle. The following year, ending in March 2024, marked a new milestone for Taigun, as it achieved its highest export sales ever at 12,621 units. 

 

This impressive figure represents a substantial increase of 58.59% compared to the previous year. However, in FY25, exports dipped slightly to 9,312 units. Overall, from FY22 to FY25, the total export sales reached 32,742 units.

Under the hood

 

VW taigun engine

 

The VW Taigun is equipped with a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine that delivers 115 PS and 178 Nm of torque. This engine comes with two transmission options: a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. There’s also a more powerful 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine available, producing 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque. This engine offers a choice between a 6-speed manual transmission and a 7-speed DCT.
