Upcoming Maruti electric cars in India — Expected models listed

At a recent management meeting, Maruti Suzuki shared its future EV roadmap, where the carmaker reduced the upcoming number of electric vehicles from six to four. By the year 2030, Maruti Suzuki plans to launch four electric cars in the Indian market, in order to increase its market share and take the spot of the largest EV maker in the country ahead. While Maruti Suzuki has not shared the kind of electric vehicle bodystyles it’s considering, we try to break down the expected upcoming Maruti electric cars in India.

Maruti e Vitara

This one doesn’t come as a surprise, does it? The e Vitara, which made its debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Auto Expo, is not only Maruti Suzuki’s but Suzuki’s first-ever production-spec electric vehicle to go on sale in India and abroad. It has been engineered to cater to the needs of the European and Indian market and will be exclusively manufactured at Suzuki’s manufacturing plant in Gujarat and exported to the foreign markets.

Speaking about its specifications, the Maruti e Vitara comes with two battery pack options—49kWh and 61kWh—both of which channel power to a front mounted electric motor that produces 144PS and 174PS with the respective battery pack options. It is worth mentioning that in addition to the two battery pack options, the Euro-spec e Vitara also offers the option of an all-wheel-drive, with a small motor mounted at the rear axle in addition to the primary front electric motor.

The Maruti e Vitara India launch is likely to take place in the first half of the year 2025 and certain Nexa dealerships have already begun accepting bookings for the electric SUV. The Maruti e Vitara will go against the likes of the Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Curvv, Mahindra BE 6 and Mahindra XUV400. Speaking of the Maruti e Vitara price, it could fall in the region of Rs 18 lakh to 25 lakh ex-showroom, New Delhi.

Maruti YMC MPV

Capitalising on the emerging MPV segment, Maruti Suzuki will also have something in store for the electric MPV segment. Codenamed the Maruti YMC concept, this electric MPV will share its electric platform—the Heartect-e platform—with the e Vitara. Maruti Suzuki is already a leader in the MPV segment with offerings like the Eeco, Ertiga and XL6 and the upcoming electric MPV will further solidify the brand’s reach in this emerging space. At this point, there is only one electric MPV in India—the BYD eMAX 7—that is likely to be joined by the upcoming Kia Carens-based EV and MG M9 luxury electric MPV.

Since it’s going to be an MPV, expect a spacious cabin with 6- and 7-seater configurations and needless to say, long driving range. It could share its battery and motor components with the Maruti e Vitara. More importantly, the upcoming Maruti electric MPV will also have its Toyota counterpart, just like in the case of the Maruti e Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser EV. The Maruti YMC India launch could take place in the second half of 2026, followed by the launch of its Toyota counterpart.

Maruti small electric car

Given Maruti Suzuki’s dominance in the small car market, it would be a no-brainer for Maruti Suzuki to bring an electric vehicle in the small car segment catering to the emerging needs of the growing customer base. The one that’s rumoured to take this place is the Y2V, which is said to be the first EV designed by Maruti from ground-up. It is likely to be very cost efficient when launched and go against the likes of the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV. The Y2V could play a crucial role in mass adoption of electric vehicles in India, especially in the small car segment, which up until now, has seen negligible acceptance to EVs.

Maruti Fronx EV

The fourth model on the upcoming Maruti electric cars list is the Fronx EV—an electric derivative of one of Maruti’s best-selling cars in the Indian market. The Fronx is already available in smart hybrid and turbo iterations and a strong hybrid powertrain is also in the pipeline. We expect the Fronx EV to pick up the styling of the crossover and combine it with the skateboard EV platform for maximum efficiency. As we speak, there is no option of a small electric crossover in the Indian market, till Hyundai comes up with its India-spec iteration of the Inster EV. 

It is worth mentioning that all the models mentioned in the list above are likely to be launched in the Indian market within the next four years. Maruti Suzuki or Suzuki have not confirmed their plans of these models and their launch plans, except for the e Vitara, of course! These upcoming Maruti electric vehicles will play a crucial role in the carmaker’s journey to clinch back its 50% market share—a part of which it lost to the fierce competition.
