A camouflaged test mule of what appears to be a smaller version of the popular Land Rover Defender SUV has been spied testing for the first time, confirming the rumours of JLR developing a ‘Baby’ Defender. The upcoming mini Defender will go against the mini-version of another very popular SUV — the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Here’s what we know so far about the Land Rover Baby Defender.
Upcoming Land Rover Baby Defender spied

The latest generation of the Land Rover Defender has been quite successful in various automotive markets, including India. At present, Land Rover offers the Defender in three broad configurations — Defender 90, Defender 110, and Defender 130 — with the 90 being the most compact one and the 130 being the longest. There have been rumours in the past about JLR developing a smaller version of the Defender, which will be based on a new platform. Rumours suggest that it might be called the Land Rover Defender Sport or the Land Rover Defender 80.

Land Rover Baby Defender EV details

Reports suggest that the mini-Defender will be underpinned by JLR’s new Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform, which will also be shared by Tata Motors for the upcoming Tata Avinya EV. As it pans out, the new Defender will be an electric SUV and ditch the petrol and diesel engines.

Baby Defender design features

The test mule suggests that the Baby Defender will carry over the iconic boxy styling language with a straight bonnet, pronounced wheel arches, an exaggerated shoulder line, and a flat rear end. There’s still no information about the interior or features of the upcoming SUV, but it will, of course, come with 4x4 capabilities.
