Outline

Toyota is said to be working on a new rugged SUV, which will sit below the Fortuner in the Japanese carmaker’s portfolio. As per a new online report, the new Toyota rugged SUV production will begin from November 2024 and it will go on sale in Thailand first. The new model is said to be the spiritual successor to the now discontinued FJ Cruiser.

Toyota Mini-Fortuner Production To Start In November 2024

Touted as the Mini-Fortuner, the upcoming Toyota rugged SUV is said to share its platform with the Fortuner, Hilux and Innova Crysta. However, the platform which will underpin the new SUV has been revised with a few modifications and is already doing duty on the Hilux Champ, a pickup on sale in Thailand.

Thanks to the shared underpinnings, the Mini-Fortuner SUV is said to carry similar dimensions to its elder sibling. As per reports, the SUV could boast a wheelbase of 2750mm, width of 1830mm and height of 1850mm. Understandably, it will measure shorter in length than the Fortuner, under 4500mm, whereas the rest of the dimensions are said to be similar to that of the Fortuner.

While the engine options are not revealed, the IMV 0 platform can feature the diesel engines from 2.4-litre to 2.8-litre of displacement and also the 2.7-litre petrol engine. The aforementioned engine options are already offered with the Toyota Fortuner, both in the Indian market and internationally. Toyota may offer the same engine options to keep the simplicity or introduce smaller and more efficient engine(s), in order to maintain exclusivity for both models.

Toyota Rugged SUV India Launch?

Neither Toyota nor online reports claim the Japanese carmaker’s plans to launch the new rugged SUV in India. However, looking at the emerging trends and Indian buyers’ preference for large family SUVs, it will be sensible for Toyota to introduce the new SUV in the Indian market, thereby offering a rival to the likes of the Mahindra Thar 5 Door and Force Gurkha.
