Toyota Hyryder overtakes Glanza to become the best-selling rebadged Maruti
- 1Toyota Innova continues to be the best-selling Toyota model in India
- 2Toyota Hyryder overtakes Glanza in 2024 by a big margin
- 3Toyota recorded 33% YoY sales between April-November 2024
It’s no secret that Toyota India has been relying on rebadged Maruti Suzuki cars to maximise its operations. The badge engineering move has resulted in three benefits for Toyota — increased footfall in the dealerships, big increase in sales and achieving CAFE norms. Up until now, the Toyota Glanza was the best-selling rebadged Maruti in India but that changed recently, as the Hyryder overtook the Glanza to become the best-selling rebadged Maruti car in India under Toyota’s portfolio.

Toyota Hyryder overtakes Glanza in total sales
Looking at the sales of the year 2023 and 2024 during the period of Apr-Nov, one can notice a big difference. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, a C-segment SUV, overtook the Toyota Glanza, a B2-segment hatchback in sales. It is worth mentioning that both models are shared with Maruti and it’s Maruti Suzuki that sells more units of the Grand Vitara and Baleno than the Hyryder and Glanza, respectively. With that said, Toyota India recorded an increase of 33% in YoY sales between April-November 2024 over the same period in 2023.

Coming to the numbers, in 2023, Toyota sold 35,534 units of the Glanza between April 2023 and November 2023 and 26,831 units of the Hyryder during the same period. Coming to the year 2024, Toyota sold 33,800 units of the Glanza between April 2024 and November 2024 and 41,077 units of the Hyryder during the same period. A difference of over 7,000 units between the Hyryder and Glanza, with the former taking the lead is a big achievement for Toyota.
Urban Cruiser Hyryder is more Toyota than you think
As these badge engineering models are concerned in the Indian market, we have not seen anything more than just a badge replacement from Maruti to Toyota, along with a few design changes. However, the Hyryder is different, as it makes use of Toyota’s own strong hybrid powertrain, which also benefits its cousin, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. While we do not have the powertrain split for the Hyryder, we strongly believe that Toyota sells more Hyryder SUVs equipped with the hybrid system than what Maruti sells with the Grand Vitara.
