- 3Good bump in fuel efficiency expected
Toyota Fortuner is by-far one of the most popular SUVs in India. All thanks to its rock-solid reliability and proven off-road capabilities, new customers plunge towards it when making a buying decision in its segment. However, Toyota introduced a hybrid version of Fortuner in the global markets back in April. With the possibility of the Toyota Fortuner Hybrid launching in India, we share the complete details below on what to expect from it.
Toyota Fortuner Hybrid: What Will Be Different?
Launched in South Africa in April’24, the mild-hybrid version of Fortuner is more efficient than the regular variants. Based on the Legender’s design, the mild-hybrid Fortuner technology has been badged MHEa V, as it is carried from the Hilux pickup truck. This technology uses a 48V electric setup that offers an idle start/stop, as well as better throttle response from standstill. The cumulative result of this, is the improved fuel economy that stands at a claimed 13.5 kmpl mark. For reference, the standard variant without MHEV gives 12.65 kmpl. Hence, the added benefit of efficiency will prove to be a big benefit for customers with high annual usage.
Toyota is offering the MHEV tech only with the 6-speed automatic transmission option. Hence, the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine is sold only in a single MHEV variant in South Africa, where it was launched in April. To make it look a bit better in terms of packaging, Toyota has added ADAS and 360-degree parking camera view to the MHEV Fortuner.

Fortuner Hybrid India Launch, Price, Rivals
So, will it launch in India? Well, during the launch in South Africa, Toyota shared its plans of introducing the Fortuner hybrid in other global markets within this year. India being one of the top markets for Fortuner, we can not deny that it’ll not launch here. But, the timeline of its launch could be mid-next year. Hence, we still have a long wait before we get our hands on the Fortuner hybrid. Moreover, considering that it’ll be a top-of-line variant, its pricing will be more than Rs 55 lakh, when launched. Currently, MG Gloster is its sole rival in India, and the Gloster itself is going to get a major facelift by the end of 2024. There are also online rumours suggesting that Ford might return to India, and Endeavour will be re-launched. If so, then Fortuner should be ready to face strong competition in 2025.
