Top 10 best selling SUVs in India — A mixed bag

The Indian automotive market is dominated by SUVs today. Sedans are slowly disappearing from the portfolios of automakers, and there are fresh body styles such as the coupe SUV coming in. The popularity of SUVs is not restricted to India but is a global phenomena, with companies such as Ferrari and Rolls Royce too coming up with their versions of an ‘SUV’. We aren’t here to discuss these cars here at the moment though. Getting back to the point, here’s a list of the top 10 best selling SUVs in India, including the latest data from March 2025.

Hyundai Creta

The Hyundai Creta was the best selling SUV in India last month, gathering a total sales of 18,059 units. The number of Hyundai Cretas sold every month is greater than the total monthly sales of quite a few mass market car manufacturers in India.
Tata Punch

The record-breaking Tata Punch secured the second spot in the list of top selling SUVs in India in March 2025, with a cumulative sales figure of 17,714 units across powertrains and variants. Whether or not it should be called an SUV is a very debatable topic though.

Maruti Brezza

Selling 16,546 units last month, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza stood at the third spot of the best selling SUVs in India in March 2025. The Brezza comes with a 1.5-litre K-Series petrol engine, generating 103PS and 137Nm of torque. There’s also the option of a factory-fitted CNG, further widening the appeal of this SUV.
Tata Nexon

Ranking just behind the Maruti Brezza, the Tata Nexon gathered 16,366 units of sales during the same period. The Tata Nexon is available in a variety of powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, electric, and now CNG too! It is, in fact, the first passenger car in India to get a turbocharged-petrol engine fitted with a CNG kit.
Mahindra Scorpio

The Scorpio has been the best selling Mahindra SUV in India consistently over the past few months, selling 13,913 units in the last month itself. This includes the sale of both Mahindra Scorpio Classic as well as Mahindra Scorpio N, with the brand selling more diesel Scorpios than petrol ones.

Maruti Fronx

The Maruti Fronx is not just a better-looking Baleno. It proves to be an appealing package that bundles practicality, driveability, as well as a great design. MSIL has been able to sell 13,669 units of the Fronx in March 2025, pushing it to the sixth spot.
Hyundai Venue

One of Fronx’s key competitors, the Hyundai Venue, gathered 10,441 units of sales last month. Its sister car, the Kia Sonet, slips out from the top selling SUVs in India list as the Mahindra Bolero makes it to the top 10, even overtaking the XUV 3XO.
Maruti Grand Vitara

The Maruti Grand Vitara, essentially a rebadged version of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, sits at the eighth spot, with a total sales number of 10,418 in March 2025. The Grand Vitara is available in petrol, CNG, as well as hybrid variants.

Mahindra Thar

Mahindra has got another contender for this list, establishing its stronghold with the new Mahindra Thar Roxx. The Thar Roxx and the 3-door Thar together brought in 8,936 units of sales in the month of March 2025.
Mahindra Bolero

Overtaking most of its own stablemates like the XUV700 and the XUV 3XO, the Mahindra Bolero takes the tenth spot in this list. The Indian carmaker sold a combined 8,031 units of the Mahindra Bolero, Mahindra Bolero Neo, and Mahindra Bolero Neo Plus in March 2025.
