Top 10 best selling cars in India - Bursting through the sales charts

Owing to India’s ridiculously growing population and the ever-expanding auto sector, most of the cars launched here crack good sales numbers in absolute terms. However, some cars outshine their competitors by a substantial margin and make it to the top of the sales chart. Here is a list of the top 10 best selling cars in India over the last six months, including the latest data from March 2025. Evidently, the list is dominated by Maruti Suzuki.

Best selling cars in India March 2025

Hyundai Creta

Hyundai’s star performer, the Hyundai Creta, stood at the first position in the list of best selling cars in India in March 2025. Selling a total of 18,059 units last month, this compact SUV comes with a variety of engine & transmission options — a 1.5-litre petrol with a 6-speed MT and a CVT, a 1.5-litre diesel with a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed AT, and a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT — and is generously loaded with features, which make it a great package. 

Maruti Swift

Selling 17,746 units last month, the Swift made its place to the second spot in this list. Maruti Suzuki gave the Swift a generational update last year, and the car now comes powered by a 1.2-litre Z-Series three-cylinder petrol engine, generating 82PS of power and 111.7Nm of torque.

Tata Punch

Tata Punch, the car that broke many sales records over the last few months, stood at the third position last month. Tata Motors sold a cumulative 17,714 units of the Punch, which includes sales of both the Tata Punch ICE and the Tata Punch EV. 

Maruti Wagon R 

India’s best selling car, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, ranked just behind the Punch, selling a total of 17,175 units. Maruti is celebrating 25 years of sales of the Wagon R in India, making it one of the longest selling cars in India. 

Maruti Ertiga

The only MPV to make it to the list of top 10 highest selling cars in India, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga garnered 16,804 units of sales last month. The Ertiga comes with a 1.5-litre K-Series petrol engine, generating 103PS and 137Nm of torque. There’s an option of a factory-fitted CNG kit too.

Maruti Brezza

Maruti Suzuki Brezza was sixth best selling car in India in March 2025, gathering a total sales number of 16,546 units. The Brezza gets the same powertrain options as that of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, and both cars are due to be updated soon.

Tata Nexon

Next in line is the Tata Nexon, selling a total of 16,366 units last month. The Tata Nexon is available in a wide range of powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric powertrains, catering to diverse customer bases.

Maruti Dzire

Following an update of the Maruti Swift, the Dzire also underwent a generational change. MSIL sold 15,460 units of the Dzire last month. The new Dzire shares its powertrains with the fourth generation Swift, and looks a lot more upmarket than its predecessor.

Mahindra Scorpio

The Scorpio has been Mahindra’s best selling vehicle consistently over the past few months, selling 13,913 units in the last month itself. This includes the sales of both the Mahindra Scorpio Classic as well as the Mahindra Scorpio N. What’s interesting is the fact that Mahindra sells more diesel Scorpios than petrol ones. 

Maruti Fronx

Making its way from the first to the last spot in the list of top 10 best selling cars in India, the Maruti Fronx brought in 13,669 units of sales last month. The Fronx gets five options for the powertrain — a 1.2-litre petrol engine with a 5-speed MT or a 5-speed AMT, a 1.2-litre petrol engine with a factory-fitted CNG kit paired to a 5-speed MT, and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine paired to either a 5-speed MT or a 6-speed AT.
