Owing to India’s ridiculously growing population and the ever-expanding auto sector, most of the cars launched here crack good sales numbers in absolute terms. However, some cars outshine their competitors by a substantial margin and make it to the top of the sales chart. Here is a list of the top 10 best selling cars in India. Evidently, the list is dominated by Maruti Suzuki.

Celebrating 25 years of sales in India, the Wagon R has always managed to find a spot on the list of best selling cars for as long as one can recall. Maruti Suzuki sold 1,02,503 units of the Wagon R over the past 6 months, averaging at around 17,000 units a month. The Maruti Wagon R is priced between Rs 5.65 lakh and Rs 7.47 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

Maruti Suzuki’s hot-selling MPV, the Ertiga, garnered sales of 96,548 units for MSIL over the past 6 months. The Ertiga comes with a 1.5-litre K-Series petrol engine, generating 103PS and 137Nm of torque. There’s an option of a factory-fitted CNG kit too. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga price ranges between Rs 8.84 lakh and Rs 13.13 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Hyundai Creta

Hyundai’s star performer, Hyundai Creta, reserves the third spot in the list of India’s top selling cars. This compact SUV comes with a variety of engine & transmission options — a 1.5-litre petrol with a 6-speed MT and a CVT, a 1.5-litre diesel with a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed AT, and a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT — and is generously loaded with features, which make it a great package.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza

Maruti Brezza is the fourth highest selling car in India, clocking 94,280 units over the past 6 months. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza gets the same engine that is also offered on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. There’s an option for a factory-fitted CNG kit as well. The Brezza is priced between Rs 8.54 lakh and Rs 14.14 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Maruti Suzuki Fronx

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx has climbed up several spots in the list of most selling cars in India, selling 92,580 units over the last 6 months. The Fronx gets five options for the powertrain — a 1.2-litre petrol engine with a 5-speed MT or a 5-speed AMT, a 1.2-litre petrol engine with a factory-fitted CNG kit paired to a 5-speed MT, and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine paired to either a 5-speed MT or a 6-speed AT.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Maruti Suzuki gave the Swift a generational update last year. MSIL sold 92,288 units of the Swift over the last 6 months, making it to our list of best selling cars in India. The Swift is now powered by a 1.2-litre Z-Series three-cylinder petrol engine, generating 82PS of power and 111.7Nm of torque. Maruti Suzuki Swift price ranges between Rs 6.49 lakh and Rs 9.64 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
Maruti Suzuki Baleno

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is an all-rounder hatchback, and claims the seventh spot on the list of most selling cars in India. Maruti Suzuki managed to sell 91,224 units of the Baleno, while Toyota could only sell about a third as much of the Glanza — a badge-engineered version of the Baleno — during the same period.
Tata Punch

Tata Punch has slumped down to being the eighth highest selling car in India, looking at the data from the last 6 months. Tata offers a wide range of powertrain options for the Punch — petrol, petrol with CNG, and electric. This makes the Punch appealing to a huge segment of buyers. Its SUV-like stance and 5-star safety rating add to the appeal.

Tata Nexon

The next car in the list of the top 10 highest selling cars in India is the Tata Nexon, selling 85,840 units over the last six months, averaging at around 14,300 units a month. The Nexon is available in a wide range of powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, CNG, as well as electric.
Mahindra Scorpio

The Scorpio has been Mahindra’s best selling vehicle consistently over the past few months, selling 84,074 units in the last 6 months itself. This includes the sale of both Mahindra Scorpio Classic as well as Mahindra Scorpio N. What’s interesting is the fact that Mahindra sells more diesel Scorpios than petrol ones.
