Tata Sierra patent images reveal a different design from concept — All details inside

The Tata Sierra, which made its first debut at the 2020 Auto Expo and since then, the legendary SUV design has gone through multiple revisions. The latest design, which was said to be the final design, made its debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Auto Expo 2025. However, the recent design patents filed by Tata Motors for the upcoming Sierra SUV showcase some tweaks to the design that are rather important to be given a miss. We explain the changes in the article ahead and mention all necessary details about the upcoming Tata Sierra SUV.

Tata Sierra patent images leaked

The new patent images from Tata Motors reveal the production-spec design of the upcoming Sierra SUV. As we mentioned earlier, it misses out a few signature design elements, which made the design of the Sierra different from the regular Tata SUVs. Only if you haven’t guessed those changes by now, the biggest change is the absence of the B-pillar window kink, which was a part of the concept design, and a rather important one given its resemblance to the OG Sierra SUV.

Furthermore, the patent image also reveals a clean and singular roofline, devoid of any segmented body panels, that were showcased with the concept model. The plastic body panels surrounding the later part of the roof mimicked the look of the original glass roof above the 2nd-row of the SUV. With these key details not making it to the production-spec model, it will be a big setback for the prospective Sierra SUV customers. However, the rest of the design elements, which include the black applique surrounding the front fascial, flat side profile and large machined alloy wheels, are retained with the production design of the SUV.

Large design distinction between Sierra ICE and Sierra EV

It is worth mentioning that the patent images seen in this article and the model that was showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Auto Expo 2025 was the Sierra ICE. Tata Motors is yet to take the wraps off the Sierra EV in its pre-production form and it is likely to have some design distinction compared to the Sierra ICE. We can expect a different face for both SUVs, offering their respective unique design details whereas the rest of the design elements and dimensions are likely to remain similar between the two models.

Tata Sierra expected powertrain options

The upcoming Tata Sierra engine options could include two choices — a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine. It is worth mentioning that Tata Motors is yet to officially comment on the powertrain options for the Sierra. The 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is likely to make its debut on the Sierra, followed by its introduction in the Harrier and Safari SUVs. Furthermore, the Sierra is likely to get Tata’s own 1.5-litre diesel engine from the Curvv and not the 2.0-litre diesel engine from the Harrier/Safari, which is sourced from Stellantis group.

Tata Sierra India launch timeline

Given the emergence of design patents and debut at the Auto Expo 2025, it seems that Tata Motors may launch the Sierra before the Sierra EV. The Sierra ICE could gauge the market to begin with, lending Tata enough time to ready the EV version with more features, given it will face fierce competition from Mahindra’s EV duo — the BE 6 and XEV 9e. The Tata Sierra India launch is likely to take place towards the end of 2025.
