Tata Motors is contemplating the expansion of its recently launched Racer performance brand by adding additional models and powertrain options, following the debut of the Tata Altroz Racer. The company is currently evaluating market response to the Altroz Racer, and if it manages to garner enough interest, it could pave the way for the introduction of high-performance electric vehicles under the Racer banner as well as ICE options.

Tata Racer Brand Could Include Both ICE And EV Models

Tata Motors’ Managing Director, Shailesh Chandra, suggested the possibility of an electric version of the Altroz Racer, stating, “We are working on an electric version of the Altroz. So there could be an electric hot hatch version, too.” This indicates Tata’s interest in broadening the Racer brand's portfolio to include both petrol and electric variants, similar to Hyundai’s N Line performance division.

Although Tata Motors has previously indicated plans for an Altroz EV, first revealed as a concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the addition of a sportier Racer-badged variant could enhance the brand's appeal. Chandra remarked that Tata is open to incorporating a range of models under the Racer banner, noting, “If this works well, there will be a more comprehensive approach to how we handle the performance brand. Electric is just part of it; we also have some engine options going forward.”

This potential expansion represents a renewed focus on performance models for Tata Motors, which had previously ventured into this space with the JTP-badged Tiago and Tigor in 2018. However, the JTP models, produced through a joint venture with Jayem Automotives, were discontinued by April 2020 due to low demand and the high cost of upgrading to BS6 emissions standards. JTSV, the joint venture, became a wholly owned Tata subsidiary in October 2020, and there are no plans to revive the JTP models.

Should the Racer brand gain traction, it could rival with Hyundai's N Line, which includes models such as the i20 hatchback, Venue compact SUV, and Creta midsize SUV. Tata Motors’ decision will ultimately depend on consumer interest and market conditions. The N Line brand, so far, has been perceived well in the Indian market thanks to its global N status, and affordable performance upgrades that these models have on offer over the standard models in the brand’s lineup.
