Outline

Skoda recently launched its first sub-compact SUV in India — the Skoda Kylaq. On the other side of the world, Volkswagen has been developing its own sub-compact SUV called the VW Tera, which is based on the same platform as the new Kylaq. The Tera has just been spied for the first time, being tested under disguise. Here’s what we know about the upcoming Skoda Kylaq based Volkswagen Tera SUV so far.

Upcoming Volkswagen Tera SUV

The Tera is an upcoming Volkswagen SUV in Brazil that is being developed on the same MQB-A0 platform that underpins the new Skoda Kylaq. As per media reports from Brazil, the upcoming Tera SUV will also be powered by the same 1.0-litre TSI motor that does duty on various Volkswagen and Skoda cars in India like the Virtus, Slavia, Taigun, Kushaq, and Kylaq.

Volkswagen Tera spied testing

The Volkswagen Tera has been spied testing under camouflage in Argentina. The front face of this upcoming SUV makes it instantly recognisable as a Volkswagen, even when the badge is blacked out. The pictures show a slightly sloping rear end with a pronounced character line in the middle, and roof rails on the…well, roof. The test mule can also be seen donning aero wheels like the ones you usually get to see on modern electric cars. The Brazil-spec Tera might also be longer than 4 metres as the country has no such legislation regarding less taxes for sub 4 metre cars, unlike what we have in India.

Volkswagen Tera India launch plans

While Volkswagen India had earlier refuted any plans of introducing a sub-compact SUV in India, citing their sour experience with the Ameo and Polo Cross, as well as to avoid further overlapping of products with Skoda India, newer reports suggest that VW India might have had some change in plans, and bringing the new Volkswagen Tera to India is on the company’s cards. But, the same isn’t likely to be here before the end of 2025 or even 2026. If launched here, the VW Tera shall be tweaked a bit as per Indian regulations and market conditions, notably making it fall inside the sub 4 metre segment.

Unless you’re living under a rock, you must have heard of the Kylaq, which is the latest Skoda car in India that has been launched to grab a share of the lucrative and booming sub-compact SUV segment. It has debuted at a starting price of Rs 7.89 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), and goes against the likes of popular SUVs in India like the Kia Sonet, Maruti Brezza, and Tata Nexon.
