Outline

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has issued a recall for 52 units of their India-spec models, specifically the Slavia, Virtus, Kushaq, and Taigun, as per SIAM’s official website. The recall has been made due to a potential error made during the welding process. Read further to know more details about this voluntary recall, and the particular cars affected by it.

Slavia, Virtus, Kushaq, Taigun affected

Under this recall, 14 Skoda cars comprising certain units of the Slavia and Kushaq have been recalled. Volkswagen has also recalled 38 of its cars including the Virtus and Taigun. All these cars are manufactured in India as a part of the INDIA 2.0 programme. The timeline that these affected models belong to has been listed as November 29, 2023 to January 1, 2024.

Reason for the recall

The manufacturer has said that there might be a potential missing weld seam on the track control arm. This is a crucial component as it connects the car’s chassis to its wheels and suspension. Failure of this may result in a sudden loss of vehicle stability and control, making the occupants highly vulnerable to accidents.

Official statement

There hasn’t been any official public statement from either of the manufacturers yet, and they are expected to at least individually reach out to the owners of the affected cars and address the issue. This would naturally be done for no cost to the owners.

Earlier recalls from Skoda and Volkswagen

There have been recalls for these models in the past too. For instance, a recall issued in August 2023 included more than 20,000 units of the Skoda Slavia over the ‘risk of an error in the coding of the side airbag control unit that could cause the airbags to reverse their logic if they need to be activated, during an impact’. This was, however, limited to Skoda and did not include the Volkswagen Virtus
