Outline

Renault has announced its plan to take over Nissan’s stake in the Renault-Nissan India JV, which is officially called Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Limited (RNAIPL), thereby giving the French carmaker complete ownership of the India manufacturing plant. How does this move change things for Nissan operations in India and what the road ahead looks like for the JV, we break this down in this article. Read on!

Renault takes the wheel to steer growth

Paving way for a competitive inning in the Indian market, Renault is making India the centre of its operations, thereby taking complete ownership of the JV. Up until now, the India operations were shared between Renault and Nissan—having 49% and 51% stakes, respectively. Renault will now own 100% share in the JV, giving it complete ownership of the manufacturing plant in Chennai, India. However, both companies will continue with their stake in the Renault Nissan Technology & Business Center India (RNTBCI).

Will it impact Nissan India operations?

In one word, No. Nissan India will continue with its India operations and have its products manufactured—including the Magnite and future offerings—in the now Renault-owned Chennai plant. Nissan will continue to use the operation capacity of the Chennai plant to fulfil both domestic and global market demand. Furthermore, Nissan India will also continue to share its vehicle platforms with Renault—covering both current and future lineup of cars. The carmaker recently announced the Renault Triber-based MPV for India along with the C-SUV—a cousin of the Renault Duster. Jointly-developed products to continue

While Renault has taken the wheel of the Indian JV, it doesn’t bring any change to the launch plans of both carmakers. Back in 2024, Renault and Nissan revealed their product launch plan for the Indian market. Both Renault and Nissan will launch new products, including C-SUVs and electric vehicles. Currently, the Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite share the CMF-A+ platform, which will continue to support both models moving forward. Furthermore, the upcoming Triber-based Nissan MPV will also share its underpinnings and powertrain with its Renault counterpart.

CMF-B platform launch in 2026

Renault will bring in its new India-specific CMF-B platform in 2026, boasting heavy localisation and modularity. Named Common Modular Family-B, this platform will spawn C-segment and D-segment SUVs, tailored for the needs of the Indian customers. The CMF-B platform will underpin the Renault Duster, Nissan’s C-SUV and their respective 7-seater D-segment iterations. The introduction of the CMF-B platform will steer growth and accelerate profitability for both carmakers in the Indian market.

Renault Twingo-based Nissan EV confirmed

The recent announcement also confirms the arrival of a Nissan EV, based on the Renault Twingo. Starting in 2026, Renault Group, through Ampere—Europe’s first intelligent EV pure player—will develop and manufacture a derivative of the A-segment Twingo for Nissan. This model, designed by Nissan, will be introduced in the European market and India launch is also said to be on the cards too, along with its Renault iteration.
