Over 2,00,000 Hyundai and Kia EVs recalled in USA — Here's the issue
- 1A similar recall was issued earlier this year affecting 1,47,100 EVs in the USA
- 2Certain units of the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 were also recalled in India
- 3Affected models include Ioniq 6, Ioniq 6, EV6, GV60, GV70 Electrified & G80
Hyundai and Kia have together issued a recall for over 2,00,000 electric cars in the USA, due to a potential issue with the cars’ Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU). Yes, that’s the same reason due to which certain units of the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 were recalled in India a while back. Read more about this large-scale recall here.
ICCU failure
ICCU, or Integrated Charging Control Unit, is a component that is responsible for charging the 12-volt auxiliary battery in cars, including the ones built on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform (Electric Global Modular Platform). The ICCU manages high and low-voltage currents and also charges the low-voltage battery. Failure of the ICCU can cause the 12-volt battery to not get charged, resulting in potentially dangerous situations on the road, such as the car suddenly stalling.
Cars affected
The cars included in this latest recall include units of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70 Electrified, and Genesis G80 manufactured between 2023-2025, as well as units of the Kia EV6 manufactured between 2022-2025.

What should the owners do?
Customers of the affected cars shall be contacted by their respective manufacturers for an inspection and if the need arises, a replacement of the defected component.
