Next-Gen Toyota Fortuner — Top Things To Know
- 1Next-gen Toyota Fortuner in the works
- 2Likely to get underpinned by the new platform
- 3To retain both petrol, diesel powertrain options
Toyota Fortuner has been the ruling SUV of its segment, even since it got launched back in 2009. Spread across several facelifts for 2 generations, the Fortuner has been the primary choice for buyers looking to have a rugged and reliable 4X4 SUV. However, the Fortuner has now started to show its age and its exorbitant price tag doesn’t justify what it offers in today’s day and age. In order to fix this, Toyota is working on the next-generation Fortuner, which is said to be a lot more upmarket and premium than the current model. In this article, we share the top things you need to know about the upcoming next-gen Toyota Fortuner.
All New Design
While there are no images of the new-gen Fortuner surfacing online, we expect Toyota to completely revamp the design of the Fortuner SUV. It could take cues from the recently revealed Tacoma pick-up and 4Runner SUVs. Both the Tacoma pickup and 4Runner SUV share the same platform and powertrains and offer a rugged exterior stance, which should be well suited for the Indian audience.

Tech-Loaded Interior
Needless to say, the current generation of the Fortuner is downright outdated compared to the current standards in the premium SUV space. The next-gen Toyota Fortuner interior is likely to get a big revamp, featuring richer quality materials, soft touch dashboard and new features. While the current Fortuner is far away from being feature-loaded, the new Fortuner could pack features such as a larger touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, power-adjustable front seats and Level-2 ADAS features.
New Platform
That point is something that would concern the future Fortuner buyers. Multiple reports suggest that the new Fortuner will move to the monocoque chassis, the same one that currently underpins the Innova Hycross. While a monocoque chassis brings its own set of benefits like better space utilisation and comfort, it doesn’t suit vehicles that are meant to do hardcore offroading, like the Fortuner. It remains to be seen how Toyota navigates this and retains the core character of its best-selling SUV in India.
Next-Gen Fortuner Powertrains
We expect the new Fortuner to continue offering both petrol and diesel engine options. The new 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which also powers the Innova Hycross, could replace the Fortuner’s 2.7-litre petrol engine. Furthermore, the next-gen Fortuner is also likely to offer the 2.7-litre mild-hybrid diesel engine, which is already available in the Thai market with the current Fortuner model. The addition of a mid-hybrid system should result in better real-life fuel efficiency, which has not been one of the strongest points for the Fortuner in India.

Next-Gen Toyota Fortuner Launch Timeline
At this point, it is hard for us to determine the next-gen Toyota Fortuner launch timeline, since there have been no spy images or other updates online. However, it is no secret that the Japanese carmaker is already working on the next-gen Fortuner, which will surely be launched in the Indian market. The new Fortuner will continue to go up against the likes of the Ford Endeavour, Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian and MG Gloster.
