Outline

A new report claims that Tata Motors have begun working on the next-gen Nexon, which is said to bring a host of changes. First launched back in 2017, the Nexon has received one small and one major facelift, infusing new life to the sub-compact SUV. In this article, we share the expected advancements and changes the new-gen Nexon could bring.

Next-gen Tata Nexon launch in 2027

If the report from Autocar India is to be believed, the next-gen Tata Nexon will be launched in the Indian market in 2027 and its development has already begun under the name “Garud”. It will sit on the reworked X1 platform, which originally traces its roots back to the Indica. It remains to be seen whether the next-gen Nexon EV continues to share its underpinnings with the Nexon ICE or get a dedicated EV platform. The latter holds a stronger likelihood and reports about the launch of the new-gen Nexon EV in 2026 further reinforce the claim.

New Nexon with fresh design

The first Nexon marked a turning point for the carmaker in the Indian market as it brought a new design language from the house of Tata Motors. The same is also likely to be the case with the upcoming new-gen Nexon. Tata Motors has been getting a lot of flak on the design of its cars that look very similar to each other. The new-gen Nexon is likely to offer a complete redesign, which like in the past, could shape the design direction for future models.

New-gen Nexon may skip diesel engine

The Tata Nexon is currently the only car in the Indian market that is offered with nearly every powertrain possible—petrol, diesel, CNG and electric. However, that may not be the case with the new-gen Nexon, with the diesel being pulled out from the lineup. It is worth mentioning that Tata’s 1.5-litre diesel engine is the only one on sale without urea-based filtration system, which requires a lot of upkeep.

However, it has turned out to be tricky for Tata Motors to comply with emission standards without the Adblue system and it's unlikely to match the more stringent BS7 standards. Given the slumping demand of the diesel engines across segments, we wouldn’t be surprised if Tata decides to not continue with the diesel engine in the Nexon.

In case you still want to have a diesel-powered Nexon, without the hassle of maintenance associated with modern diesel engines, consider choosing from a range of used Tata Nexon SUVs that will have minimal maintenance and superb efficiency, all at an unbeatable price.
