Outline

JSW MG Motor India has launched its new all-electric crossover in India, the MG Windsor EV. Earlier speculated to be named as the MG Cloud EV, the Windsor EV is based on the Wuling Cloud EV that is available in Indonesia. What's interesting is that MG is offering the Windsor EV via a Battery-as-a-Service model. Wondering what's that? Read ahead to know more about the new MG Windsor EV and MG's new BaaS model.

2024 MG Windsor EV - What is it?

Windsor EV is MG’s all-new electric car that is also the British-Chinese carmaker’s third EV offering in India after the MG Comet EV and MG ZS EV. It is the first of the five new vehicles that the carmaker has planned to launch in India over the next one year. Launched at an introductory price of Rs 9.99 lakh, MG is offering the 2024 MG Windsor EV through a Battery-as-a-Service model wherein you pay MG for every kilometre you drive.

Battery-as-a-Service

JSW MG Motor India has launched a new initiative in India, which it has termed as BaaS or Battery-as-a-Service. Under this, MG will offer its EVs at a lower upfront cost and the users will be charged a certain amount per kilometre that they drive. For the Windsor, this cost has been set at Rs 3.5/km for the battery. You'll have to pay around a rupee more for charging the battery (this will vary upon the charging station) and roughly 25 paise for miscellaneous stuff. Charging via public chargers is also free for the first year to the initial customers of the Windsor EV. MG is offering a guaranteed buyback value of 60% after three years on the new MG Windsor EV.

Windsor EV design

The MG Cloud EV is an electric crossover, which MG boldly claims offers the best of both worlds — sedan and SUV. It is underpinned by a skateboard platform that has been purpose-built for EVs, which ensures a spacious cabin along with short front and rear overhangs. Featuring a curvy and minimalist design, the Windsor sits on 18-inch wheels that feature a five-spoke design. It gets modern flush door handles and connected light bars both at the front as well as the rear. On the inside, there is a black theme along with gold inserts throughout.

Dimensions and boot space

The MG Windsor EV has an impressive wheelbase of 2,700 milimetres, offering lots of space inside the cabin. It measures 1,850mm in width and 1,677mm in height. MG has not disclosed the length of the new Windsor EV. The Windsor EV claims to offer a massive boot space as well, 604 litres to be precise.

MG Windsor features

The MG Windsor comes with a variety of features, just like every other car from MG. It also gets a few new and interesting bits such as lounge-like 135-degree multi-step reclining rear seats that can also be finished in a premium-looking leather quilting material. The seats also offer a 60:40 split function and the front seats come with ventilation. Talking about the tablets, it gets a 15.6-inch infotainment system and an 8.8-inch TFT instrument cluster. The large screen at the centre also seems to offer OTT and gaming functions, though we'll leave that on you to decide whether that's a good idea.

The Windsor also comes with a 9-speaker system from Infinity, and front & rear armrests with storage. It also gets a large fixed glass roof, a bold step takes by MG in a market that is obsessed with panoramic sunroofs. At the safety front, there's ESC, disc brakes on all four wheels, electric brake with auto-hold function, TPMS and other stuff that you would expect to be part of a standard safety package nowadays.

Battery, motors and range

The MG Windsor EV comes with a 38kWh lithium-ion battery pack with prismatic cells, which sits on a skateboard EV platform. The battery pack feeds power to a front-mounted single motor that has a claimed range of 331 kilometres. The permanent magnet synchronous electric motor produces 136PS of power and 200Nm of torque. MG has not yet disclosed the charging time for the Windsor EV.

New MG Windsor EV price

The 2024 MG Windsor EV price starts from Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base Excite variant. You'll have to pay another Rs 3.5 per kilometre to MG for the battery. This doesn't sound like a bad deal to us, but we'll reserve our opinion till we drive the car. Stay tuned for our review! Bookings commence on October 3 and deliveries start from Oct 12, 2024. By the way, the car is offered in three variants — Excite, Exclusive, Essence — and four colour options. MG will also release a regular ex-showroom price inclusive of the battery cost before commencing the bookings on the said date.
