Outline

Maruti Suzuki has been reportedly working on turbocharging its new 1.2-litre Z-series petrol engine, and the same could replace the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated K-Series engine on various cars such as the Maruti Grand Vitara and Maruti Brezza. Maruti currently has the 1.0-litre Boosterjet on its portfolio in India, but that is restricted to the Fronx. Here are more details about this story.

As per a report by V3 Cars, Maruti Suzuki is developing a turbocharged iteration of its 1.2-litre Z-series engine that was introduced this year with fourth generation Swift. This could potentially replace the 1.5-litre K-Series engine on the Grand Vitara, which currently produces 103PS of power and 137Nm of maximum torque.

Expectations

The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol is expected to exceed the 1.5-litre in terms of performance and output figures, while at the same time, reducing the price to the final consumer due to a shift in taxation brackets for certain models. The reduction in tax could be as significant as Rs 1.5 lakh in case of the Brezza, as reported by V3Cars. There would of course be added costs due to the expenditure on R&D, but that tends to be lower than the amount of taxes saved. City driveability would also likely see an improvement as three-cylinder turbocharged engines generally tend to be more eager at lower RPMs with their superior torque delivery.
