- 1Renault Triber scored 2 stars in GNCAP
- 2Maruti Suzuki Ertiga scored 1 star in GNCAP
- 3Both cars equipped with 2 airbags only
Global NCAP recently released safety crash test ratings for the made-in-India Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Renault Triber. While the ratings are released for the South African markets, both the MPVs that have been tested are made-in-India and boast a similar spec as the India-spec model. It is worth mentioning that both the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Renault Triber have been crash tested before by Global NCAP, in which they received higher ratings compared to the new results. However, since those crash tests, Global NCAP has revised its testing protocol, incorporating higher standards for safety as well as more stringent tests. In this article, we compare the crash test safety rating of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Renault Triber to find out which one is more safe.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga GNCAP Safety Rating
In the latest Global NCAP crash test, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga scored 1 star in adult occupant safety and 2 stars in child occupant safety crash tests. The star ratings have decreased by 2 stars and 1 star for the adult and child occupant safety, respectively, over the last crash test. However, as we stated earlier, Global NCAP has tweaked its testing protocol, incorporating more stringent safety tests than before. Like earlier, the bodyshell of the Ertiga was found unstable and unable to take further loading.

Coming to the points scored by the MPV, the Suzuki Ertiga scored 23.63 points out of 34 points in the adult safety crash test and 19.40 points out of 49 points in the child safety crash test. The safety remarks reveal that the Ertiga offered good protection to driver’s and co-passengers’ head and neck whereas protection offered to the driver’s and passengers’ chest was proven marginal and good, respectively. In the side pole impact test, the South African-spec Ertiga scored poor performance owing to the lack of curtain airbags. The India-spec model on the other hand, does offer side thorax airbags, which should improve the safety rating by a slight margin.
Renault Triber GNCAP Safety Rating
Coming to the Renault Triber, like the Ertiga, the safety rating of the Renault Triber has also taken a hit from Global NCAP’s revised crash test protocols. In the new crash test done for the South African market, the Renault Triber scored 2 stars for both adult occupant and child occupant safety. Compared to the last crash test, the Triber saw its safety rating fall from 4 stars to 2 stars in the adult occupant safety and from 3 stars to 2 stars in the child occupant safety.
Speaking of the points scored, the Renault Triber scored 22.29 points out of 34 points in the adult occupant safety and 19.99 points out of 49 points in the child occupant safety test. The safety remarks reveal that the Triber offered to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck was good. Furthermore, the driver’s chest showed weak protection and the passenger's chest showed adequate protection. Like in the previous test, the bodyshell of the Renault Triber was rated unstable and incapable of taking further loadings.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Vs Renault Triber — Which One Is More Safe?
Comparing the two MPVs, in terms of points, it is the Renault Triber that comes as a more safe car to protect the passengers better in case of a crash. The Triber scored 2 stars in the crash test compared to the Ertiga that scored a single point in the adult occupant safety. However, if you look at the points, the Ertiga scored 23.63 points whereas the Triber scored 22.29 points on the adult occupant safety tests. It is unclear as to why the Ertiga was given a single star despite scoring more points than the Triber that scored 2 stars.
Coming to the child occupant safety test, the Triber scored 2 stars with 19.99 points whereas the Ertiga scored 2 stars with a lower 19.40 point score. The India-spec Ertiga and Triber offer side thorax airbags in their higher variants, which should improve safety performance in a crash.
