Outline

The Maruti Ciaz is currently the only mid-segment sedan model still on sale in India. It was first launched in 2014. Over the years, the sales of this model have clearly declined, especially with the rise of the SUV segment in the market. Recent reports suggest that the production of the Maruti Ciaz is expected to halt permanently by March 2025. It is anticipated that the model will be discontinued by April 2025. Keep reading below for more details on the discontinuation of the Maruti Ciaz, its current sales, the reasons behind this decision, and whether there is any chance of the model making a comeback under a new name or update in the future.

Maruti Ciaz to be discontinued — why?

The Maruti Ciaz, as mentioned earlier, was launched in 2014. Over the years, the model has only received a mid-life facelift in 2018. It has not experienced any significant generational updates since then. Interestingly, the Ciaz was the first car in India to feature the next-generation Smart Hybrid technology with a Lithium-Ion battery. However, over time, it seems like Maruti Suzuki has left this model behind in terms of keeping up with trends, whether it's in features, safety, looks, or the engine.

With the rise of SUVs on the roads and the competition in the market, especially with models offering trendy features to attract buyers, very few sedans continue to hold onto market share. Some of the sedans that are still competing in the market include the VW Virtus, Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze, and others. According to reports, sedans accounted for less than 10% of the market share in India in 2024, compared to 20% in 2015.

Maruti Ciaz diesel’s exit from the market hit sales numbers

Another factor that affected the sales of the Ciaz was the removal of the 1.5 DDiS diesel engine, which was introduced during its mid-life facelift. At that time, the diesel engine accounted for around 30% of the model's sales. Later, when this option was removed to meet the BS6 emission standards, they didn’t even introduce any new options to replace it. Instead, the model continued with just the 1.5-litre petrol option in the market.

In 2024, the sales numbers dropped to just three digits, while in 2023, select months like April, June, July, and September had higher sales, with numbers reaching 1,017, 1,744, 1,348, and 1,491 units, respectively. In comparison, sales were better in 2022, with the highest number of units sold being 2,515 in August. In 2021, the Ciaz also saw its highest sales in August, recording 3,001 units sold.

If the discontinuation does happen, the remaining stocks of the Maruti Ciaz, if available at dealerships, might be sold with hefty discounts for buyers. However, it's clear that there are now better rivals in the market.

Maruti Ciaz engine & mileage

The Maruti Ciaz is powered by the K15 Smart Hybrid Petrol Engine, which produces 104.6 PS of power and 138Nm of torque. It is offered with a 4-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The Maruti Ciaz mileage is claimed to be 20.65 km/l for the manual version, while the Maruti Ciaz automatic mileage is claimed to be 20.04 km/l.
