Outline

Mahindra's strong push towards EVs is clear from models like the Mahindra XEV 9e and BE 6, which they have recently introduced. These models have certainly caught attention with their battery specs, range, and features. However, recently it has been reported that Mahindra plans to venture into hybrid powertrains as well, with options ranging from mild hybrids to strong hybrids and range extenders.

Interestingly, it has been revealed that the Mahindra XUV 3XO Hybrid is expected to be launched in India by 2026. The model, under the project name 'S226,' is currently under development. Mahindra's future plans aren't just focused on this hybrid model. The Mahindra XEV 9e and BE 6e are also under consideration for hybrid versions. Let's dive deeper into what Mahindra has in store for the future, with the X3XO Hybrid and other new EVs on the horizon.

Mahindra XUV 3XO hybrid to launch in India by 2026

3XO

Looking back at the Mahindra XUV 3XO's journey, it all started with the Mahindra XUV300, which was launched in 2019. This model received a major facelift in 2024, not only getting a new design but also a new name, the Mahindra XUV 3XO. It has performed well in terms of sales, and now Mahindra is preparing to launch the EV version of this model.

Amid these developments, fresh reports have revealed that a strong hybrid version of the Mahindra XUV 3XO is planned for the near future. Currently, the model comes with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine producing up to 131PS of power and up to 230Nm of torque, and it's said that the hybrid version will feature the same engine paired with hybrid technology. The launch of the Mahindra XUV 3XO Hybrid in India is expected by 2026, with its introduction, launch, and retail availability all planned for the same year.

Not only does Mahindra have plans for the XUV 3XO, but their recently launched big EVs, the XEV 9e and BE 6, based on the INGLO platform, are also in the spotlight. These models are expected to come with range-extender hybrid powertrain options. It is also reported that the basic design and technical development for these range-extender models are already underway.

The BE 6 and XEV 9e range-extender hybrids are being developed under the codenames M130 and M330, respectively. However, Mahindra will make the final decision on whether to take these projects to the final stage in the next 6 to 8 months, after evaluating the market performance of these EVs this year.

Range extender hybrid models to boost annual unit sales

If the sales of the XEV 9e and BE 6 continue to perform well, and the range-extender hybrid versions hit the market, they are expected to contribute approximately 40,000 to 50,000 units annually. While it seems like Mahindra is testing the waters with these big EVs, they appear to be taking a cautious approach, paving the way for the future without making any big moves too quickly.

Meanwhile, the current market is shifting more towards EVs, with over 90,000 units of passenger vehicles sold in the prior year. In comparison, the number of hybrids sold, though still steady, was slightly lower at 85,000 units. However, the future definitely looks promising for both EVs and hybrids as they continue to grow in the mass market.
