The Mahindra XEV 9e is currently the flagship offering from the home-grown SUV maker, yet, it does not come with the option of an all wheel drive setup. However, that is about to change, with the expected launch of the Mahindra XEV 9e AWD. Read the story further to know more about the Mahindra XEV 9e AWD powertrain and launch timeline.

Mahindra XEV 9e AWD option launch soon

As reported by V3Cars in a fresh media report, Mahindra is said to be working on an all-wheel-drive version of the XEV 9e, as an answer to the new Tata Harrier EV. Mahindra has already revealed that its INGLO platform — the one that underpins its born electric SUVs — is capable of hosting two electric motors, thereby enabling all-wheel-drive. Once launched, the XEV 9e AWD will go against the likes of the recently-launched Tata Harrier EV.

With the introduction of the XEV 9e AWD, we do not expect any big change in terms of performance and driving range, however, small changes are likely. On the other hand, the Mahindra XEV 9e equipped with AWD could boast certain features like terrain modes and a transparent bonnet feature, like the one seen on the Harrier EV.

Mahindra XEV 9e lower variants with 79kWh incoming

In addition to the expected arrival of AWD, Mahindra is also working on introducing lower variants equipped with the larger 79kWh battery pack, thereby further boosting its adoption among customers. In a recent interaction with Autocar Professional, Rajesh Jejurikar, executive director and CEO of Mahindra’s auto and farm sector said, “There is a very large segment of people who will want 79kWh in lower packs. This has been very different from our assumption that 79kWh will be only in the top end and everything else will be 59kWh. There is a segment of people for whom range is really important over many of the other features that we are offering”.

It is worth mentioning that more than 75% of the total bookings have been made for the Pack Three variant of the XEV 9e and BE 6. While the fact reveals considerable acceptance for the top-spec variant of both SUVs, it is understood that the carmaker needs larger penetration of lower variants for sustainable sales and growth moving forward. Jejurikar revealed that customers are hesitant in making a booking for the lower variants without checking in person and test driving, thereby delaying the decision making process.
