Mahindra Thar. Does the phrase instigate a certain feeling when you read it? That’s the response Mahindra banked on (and Maruti missed) when conceptualising, launching, and marketing the current generation of the Mahindra Thar. Now, four years down-the-line, it’s time for Mahindra to give its iconic SUV a mid-life update. Here’s what you can expect from the Mahindra Thar 3-Door facelift.
Mahindra Thar: The Brand
Mahindra launched the current generation of the Mahindra Thar back in 2020, after the previous generation was discontinued to make way for the new one. And it was an instant hit. The Thar brand name worked like magic, triggering feelings of nostalgia, trust and pride in the Indian consumer’s mind. The roots of the Thar, though, go way back to the time when Mahindra & Mahindra partnered with American automaker Jeep to manufacture the Willys Jeep.
Mahindra Thar Facelift
With four years of successful sales, it makes sense to expect a facelift of the Mahindra Thar soon. While there might not be significant mechanical changes, the facelift is bound to get a host of design tweaks. The Mahindra Thar 3-door facelift is expected to get LED headlamps with C-shaped DRLs and redesigned tail lights, akin to the ones featured on the upcoming Mahindra Thar Roxx. We might also get redesigned bumpers, new alloy wheels, and the new six-slot front grille with a double-stacked layout, which might be offered with optional body-colour treatment. On the inside, we expect a modern-looking interior, an updated console, new design for the steering wheel, a wireless smartphone charger, bigger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, and a rear parking camera. Hope we don’t lose the ergonomic buttons to some weird touch-sensitive controls.

Mahindra Thar ROXX: The 5-Door Thar
While we are at it, let’s also talk about the Mahindra Thar ROXX. That’s what Mahindra has decided to name the 5-Door Thar, for reasons only Mahindra seems to understand. The Mahindra Thar ROXX is expected to build on the legacy of its 3-Door counterpart, offering more space and versatility while retaining the rugged charm and off-road capabilities that the Thar is known for. The ROXX will be launched on August 15, 2024, which also happens to be India’s 77th Independence Day.
