Hyundai Motor has announced today that the South Korean automaker has crossed the milestone of producing 100 million vehicles globally since its inception 57 years ago. Starting its journey in the automotive industry by assembling the Ford Cortina and later producing their first car, the Hyundai Pony, Hyundai has come a long way, making it to the list of the top automotive companies in the world by production volumes. Here’s more about the story.

 

Hyundai Motor Company

 

Established in 1967 as part of the Hyundai Group, Hyundai Motor Company released their first in-house designed car, the Hyundai Pony, eight years later. The automaker hasn’t looked back ever since. Notably, it entered the Indian market in 1996 and acquired a majority stake in Kia in the year 1998. 

 

100 million vehicle production milestone

 

Hyundai Motor Company has marked the cumulative production of one hundred million vehicles globally today. Celebrating this momentous milestone, the automaker held a ceremony at its Ulsan plant in Korea, which also happens to be the company’s first ever manufacturing facility. Hyundai’s 100,000,001st vehicle, an Ioniq 5, has been delivered to the customer directly by the company.

Hyundai India

Hyundai entered the Indian market as Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) 28 years ago, with the Hyundai Santro. It subsequently launched models such as the Accent, Sonata, Elantra, Getz, i10, and Verna, establishing its strong presence in the country. Today, Hyundai sells cars across a wide variety of segments, from hatchbacks to premium SUVs. Hyundai cars in India on sale today include Grand i10 Nios, i20, i20 N Line, Exter, Aura, Venue, Venue N Line, Verna, Creta, Creta N Line, Alcazar, Tucson and Ioniq 5.

 

Electrification plans and other alternative fuels

 

Hyundai is actively undertaking research and development for electric vehicles and battery technology, pioneering with its Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). The company is also working towards developing more hybrid cars and exploring hydrogen fuel cell technology. As per reports, Hyundai and Kia together expect to sell 5.58 million alternative fuel vehicles, including EVs, hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, annually by 2030.

Hyundai N

Hyundai N is the performance division of the brand, a fairly new subsidiary that has been making it to the headlines with its high-spirited cars such as the Hyundai i20 N, Elantra N and the all-electric Ioniq 5 N. Hyundai sells a couple of N Line cars in India, which are not as aggressive as the N models but are a bit sportier than the regular cars. These include Hyundai i20 N Line, Venue N Line, and the Creta N Line.
