Ford return to India confirmed — To make in India for international markets

After months of speculation and anticipation, Ford Motor Company has finally confirmed that it will be making a comeback in India soon. But, there’s a catch. Ford has no plans to sell their cars in India this time and will rather manufacture cars to be sold in global markets. Read ahead to know the full story about Ford’s return to India.
Ford’s current setup in India
At present, American automaker Ford owns a manufacturing facility at Sanand in Gujarat, where it manufactures engines. Ford also continues to provide after sales services for its existing customers in India as it sees the country as a key market for its global operations and growth.

The plan ahead
Ford Motor Company announced on Friday that it has signed a Letter of Intent with the Government of Tamil Nadu to restart manufacturing at their Chennai plant in Tamil Nadu after a hiatus of two years. Ford said that it will manufacture cars for exports at the said facility, though it hasn’t yet revealed details of exactly what cars will be manufactured here. Ford currently employs about 12,000 employees in Chennai, and has plans to recruit 2,500 to 3,000 more in the near future.
Plans for selling Ford cars in India
Ford does not have any immediate plans to restart selling their products in the Indian market. It might consider bringing their premium cars to the country at a later stage, such as the Mustang, Ranger or the Everest SUV, which has been spotted testing quite a few times.
