In a progressive move, the Chandigarh Court cancelled 69 traffic challans after the police confirmed that violations happened for legitimate reasons like making way for ambulances and VVIP convoys. You no longer need to be afraid of jumping a red light while giving way to ambulances and VVIP conveys in Chandigarh, as reinforced by a recent move by the Chandigarh Court. This move will surely boost the morale of fellow motorists on the roads and ensure courteousness among the motoring community.

Seamless challan issuance and verification
The Chandigarh Traffic Police has incorporated a rather seamless way of issuing and verifying challans for motorists on the roads. Advanced CCTV cameras monitor and capture the violators on the roads, which are proceeded to the Local Processing Unit and forwarded to the ITMS e-challan system. The challans are then proceeded to verification and approval, post which the violators are notified via an SMS. Violators also get the option to appeal in the virtual court in order to waive off the charges, and if the reason is found genuine — like in the case of 69 drivers in Chandigarh — the challans are cancelled.
Challans need to be canceled in cases where violations occurred for valid reasons, such as giving way to an ambulance or a VIP convoy, following police instructions, stolen vehicles, or medical emergencies. Considering these factors, an order for the cancellation or withdrawal of such challans should be issued.

The court acknowledged that an inquiry had been conducted by the Inspector of the PCCC Traffic Department, confirming that the challans in question were wrongly issued. It praised the Traffic Department for this initiative and emphasised the importance of regularly reviewing issued challans to prevent wrongful penalties. In light of these findings, the court approved the application and directed the concerned officials to take the necessary action.
