Outline

It hasn't been long since the Bharat NCAP was launched on October 1st, 2023, in India to assess vehicle safety. This crash test safety rating follows the Global NCAP standards and grades. One of the most essential features for a vehicle to have in order to receive a good crash test rating is 6 airbags, which has now become a standard practice in cars, helping improve safety.

However, important changes are underway with the Bharat NCAP 2.0, which is being considered for the future. A key update is the inclusion of the ADAS test under the upcoming Bharat NCAP 2.0 crash testing protocols. It is expected to be launched in India by 2027. Let’s continue reading below to dive into the full details of the Bharat NCAP 2.0 crash test and how it will impact future crash testing protocols and the safety elements in cars.

Bharat NCAP 2.0 under development — ADAS testing to be localized

At the recent second edition of The ADAS Show 2025, held on February 18th in Bengaluru, Ujjwala Karle, Deputy Director and Head of ARAI’s Technology Group, confirmed that work is already underway on the new version of Bharat NCAP. She also discussed the focus on localizing safety features like ADAS and its testing.

Currently, Bharat NCAP follows the Global NCAP elements, but the upcoming Bharat NCAP 2.0 will include ADAS testing. Additionally, a dedicated testing track for ADAS is set to be established on an 18-acre plot near the outskirts of Pune by ARAI.

While many changes are expected, including the new standards for ADAS, there is also a chance that the AIS 185 standard will be revised to include a "vulnerable road users" category, to target better safety.

Currently, the safety standards in Indian cars are improving, with 6 airbags becoming almost a standard feature, along with other important features like ESC, seat belts, and seat belt reminders for all seats, among others. However, the situation with ADAS is different. This modern feature is still mostly available in the more expensive variants of models from Tata, Hyundai, Mahindra, Toyota, and others. While Maruti Suzuki cars don't offer ADAS right now, it is expected to be included in the upcoming Maruti E-Vitara.

With these changes and the ongoing discussion around localizing ADAS, it won’t be long before we see some ADAS features even in base and mid-variants. This will make these safety features more accessible to a wider range of drivers, even if they can’t afford the top-end variants with all the advanced features.
