RC transfer

is important because it ensures that the vehicle and all legal liabilities related to it are transferred to the buyer. What is the process of RC transfer?

After selling your car, you have to apply for the RC transfer within 14 days of the

sale of the vehicle

. As mentioned earlier, you have to intimate the RTO and apply for the vehicle ownership transfer. There will be a set of documents that will come in handy for the entire transfer to happen. They are mentioned below:

Documents required to transfer vehicle ownership

As per the official RTO vehicle transfer procedure, the following documents will be required:

  • RC: The original registration certificate of the seller needs to be submitted to the RTO
  • Form 29 (Notice form to change ownership of a vehicle): Form 29 needs to be submitted along with passport size photograph of the seller and the buyer. The form should also be duly signed. Download RTO Form 29 here.
  • Form 30 (report of transfer of ownership of a motor vehicle): Form 30 needs to be submitted along with passport size photograph of the seller and the buyer. The form should be duly signed. Download RTO Form 30 here.
  • Form 28 (no objection certificate): It is required in case the vehicle has to be transferred to the RTO other than the one where the vehicle was registered. This form might not be required if the vehicle is being transferred from one city to another within a state. But, in some states like Maharashtra, it is mandatory.

So, the usage of Form 28 when the vehicle is transferred in the same state varies from city to city. However, for the inter-state transfers, Form 28 is mandatory. Download RTO Form 28 here.

  • Residential Proof: An address proof (voter card/ passport/ telephone/electricity bill/ Ration card) is mandatory. You have to also attach two self-attested copies of the address proof.
  • Report of N.C.R.B:  It is mandatory to get NCRB report if your vehicle was involved in any anti-social activity. You can get it from the nearest NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) office
  • Insurance: You need to have a valid insurance certificate
  • PUC: You need to have the photocopy of a valid pollution certificate. You have to renew the PUC in every 12 months for the cars made after April 2010 but vehicles made before that have to renew the PUC every 3 months.
  • Transfer fee - Each RTO charges some fee for the transfer of the vehicle. It includes a fraction of the service charge and the transfer fee.

Generally, it is around Rs.300 for cars. If you choose to get your work done by an agent, they will charge you hefty amounts.
