Driving has become a leisure activity in recent years, and many people have become accustomed to road adventures. Cars are not merely meant as a medium of transportation to the workplace and back, they are leveraged for experiencing the wide outdoors. With a plethora of scenic routes and tourist destinations that are accessible by road, utilizing cars for road trips has become the norm. The advent of automatic transmissions and high-end luxury cars further add to the fun element of these journeys, making them more comfortable and enjoyable.

Preparing for these long drives often include stacking up on essential items like water, other beverages, and food items. It also involves ensuring your vehicle is in good shape, checking for fluid levels and tyre air pressure. However, while taking  road trips, nobody really considers the clothes they plan to wear.. As it turns out, this is also a crucial factor, especially if you’re driving an automatic car, and one of your legs is going to be stationary for a long time. A recent incident involving a resident of Delhi stands testament to the fact that skin tight jeans may not be the best choice of clothing for a long drive.

Loose clothing may save your life

Saurabh Sharma, 30, a resident of Delhi, was on his way to Rishikish along with a friend in his luxury automatic car, wearing a pair of skin tight jeans. Little did he know that his wardrobe choice would come back to haunt him later. Saurabh continued to drive for 8 hours straight, making next to no stops on his entire journey. Since his car was an automatic, his left leg had little to no movement throughout the trip. Saurabh was able to make it back to Delhi in the same car as well, having developed slight pain in his left knee and calf. He ignored the pain and continued on with his daily routine. However, after two days, he noticed severe swelling in his leg. He was on his way to his workplace, when he suddenly collapsed on the staircase. He gained consciousness briefly, only to lose it again in just a few moments. He was rushed to Max Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, where he arrived in critical condition. He was nearly pulseless and showed no signs of blood pressure.  The Cardiology team continuously administered CPR for 45 minutes, after which Saurbah took a breath of life again.

A thorough inspection of Saurabh’s condition revealed that he had suffered from Pulmonary Embolism, which is essentially caused by the blockage of blood circulation. Even though Saurbah was revived with CPR, his kidneys were still not functioning anywhere near optimal levels, due to which he was put onto dialysis for a period of 24 hours. The primary cause for his condition was determined to be the 8 hour long drive, where he did not move his limbs much, and his skin tight jeans, which added to the blockage of blood circulation.

How to avert such health hazards during long drives

It is essential to wear loose clothing, especially for longer periods on the road, to ensure there is no hindrance to your blood circulation. Additionally, it is important to take frequent breaks, stop your vehicle and get out. Even a few moments of mobility and stretching can help you stay in optimal health during long drives.
