Uttar Pradesh (UP) is India's third most motor vehicle dense state and one of the most populous. According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), UP registered the highest number of vehicle sales in the country in the third quarter of 2023, surpassing Maharashtra. Every day sees the addition of new vehicles to the roads, thereby increasing the demand for skilled drivers. Having a valid driver’s licence is the first step towards making sure only skilled drivers are allowed to drive on the road. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ Sarathi Parivahan portal, along with the state RTO network, has simplified the DL application process. These streamlined services enable new applicants to easily access and pay fees. Read on to learn more about the applicable driving licence fee structure in Uttar Pradesh.

Driving licence fees structure in Uttar Pradesh

Broadly, there are three types of driving licence in Uttar Pradesh, as in the rest of India, namely, learner’s licence, permanent driving licence, and international driving permit. An applicant must mandatorily apply for a learner’s licence before applying for a permanent driving licence.

Further, applicants can apply for a driving license under different categories, depending on vehicle type, commercial usage, and whether the vehicle is geared or non-geared. For each of these categories, a different licence is applicable. A broad segregation as per vehicle categories is given in the table below:

Fees structure for international driving licence in Uttar Pradesh

The International Driving Permit is a facility available for existing permanent driving licence holders across all vehicle categories. The IDP allows you to drive in any country that recognizes it, with a few exceptions. One can easily apply for an IDP online by filling the application form and paying the requisite fees of ₹1,000.

How to pay learner’s licence/driving licence fees in UP online

Before applying for the permanent driving licence in Uttar Pradesh, the applicant must acquire a learner’s licence. One can apply for both learner’s licence and the permanent driving licence online. The applicant must pay the learning licence or permanent licence fees after filling out the application form online. Follow the steps below:

Step 4: The page that opens would show ‘Instructions For Online Payment for the LL / DL Applicants’ on the screen. Read carefully and click on “Proceed”.

Step 5: Fill the requested personal information, and press the tab “Click Here to Calculate Fee”.

Step 6: The applicable fees amount will be generated and displayed, depending on the service availed. Select the payment option from the “Bank/Gateway/Treasury” drop down. 

Step 7: Verify via the captcha and click on “Pay Now”. 

Step 8: Once the fee is paid, verify the fee payment by selecting the “EPayment” option from the “Fee Payments” drop down on the state home page and following the steps.

Step 9: Save the fee receipt for further reference. 

One can make the 2+4 driving licence fees payment via the UP Government’s Transport Department website as well. For this route, click on “Online Services” from the menu tab on the homepage, and select “Driving Licence Related Service” from the drop down. Click on the applicable service. You will be redirected to the Sarathi.Parivahan portal. Follow the above instructions from Step 3 onwards to complete the transaction. 

Facts about online driving licence (DL) fees in Uttar Pradesh:

Following are some important points that must be kept in mind about DL fees in Uttar Pradesh:

  • If the learner’s licence expires before the permanent DL is obtained, the LLR must be re-applied for, and the application fees must be paid again. 
  • To add more categories of vehicles to the DL, a fee of ₹500 per vehicle class must be paid. 
  • The application fees of driving licence includes the form fee of ₹200 and ₹300 of driving skill test for each vehicle category. 
  • The DL fees in Uttar Pradesh can be paid online via Sarathi.Parivahan website or offline by visiting the RTO. 
  • The DL renewal fees in Uttar Pradesh after the expiry of grace period is ₹300. 
  • The driving licence fee for 4-wheelers in UP does not vary as per the weight of the vehicle, be it Light Motor Vehicle (LMV), Medium Goods Vehicle (MGV), or Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV).
