What defines an American muscle car?

Before we go ahead and list the top 10 American muscle cars, we’ll need to establish what a muscle car is. This is especially relevant in the Indian market’s context since we haven’t really seen a big influx of those cars in the 60s and 70s. Sure, there are less than a handful examples of some, strewn across the country, but in contrast, many only managed to adorn the walls of enthusiasts, as posters.

Purists would define an American muscle car as any all-American sedan or coupe, from the 1960s to the 1980s or even later, that had a V8 in it. Although partially true, there’s a lot more to an iconic muscle car than just a big stonking V8 under the hood. The essence of an American muscle car lies in its distinct design language. The long, prominent hood that hints at the powerhouse lying beneath and a two-door coupe body style for that quintessential sporty aesthetic. Of course, rear-wheel drive is a mandatory requirement and a sloping rear end to complete the look. The “muscle” not only came from the engine but the bulge on the bonnet that a lot of these cars sported, contributing to an aggressive stance.

Then there is the sheer power and straight line performance that these machines took pride in. Later years even saw the muscle car community include smaller V6 engines, dubbed as “pony cars” where more modern engineering saw these cars go up against the V8 with more power and performance; thus challenging the traditional image of muscle cars.
