The Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV300 are amongst the most popular compact SUV models. Between the three, the Nexon was the first to arrive in 2017. Since then it has seen a few updates but the interior and ergonomics have unfortunately remained vastly unchanged, save for a few feature additions. The Venue and XUV300 both arrived in 2019. While the Venue received a facelift in 2022, the XUV300 facelift was launched in 2024 and renamed as the XUV 3XO.
The focus on safety is evident in this segment and these three cars are among the safest SUVs you can buy. They also make great second hand car buys so if you are on the lookout for a used SUV at a good price, this article should help you gain an insight.
Current Resale Value: Used Tata Nexon vs Hyundai Venue vs Mahindra XUV300
Two of the three compact SUVs here have similar resale values, the Hyundai Venue and the Mahindra XUV300. The Tata Nexon, though the most expensive of the three when new, does not hold its value as well as the other two.
Although the Nexon has more features on paper, the Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV300 have a more practical cabin layout and better ergonomics. The Venue and XUV300 also have potent turbo-petrol engines as well as refined and highly efficient diesel engines.
Tata Nexon
The later models of used Tata Nexon cars have a higher asking price thanks to more features and some advanced equipment and fancy LED lighting outside and in. That said, despite the Tata Nexon having the highest safety rating, its reliability and ergonomics go against it as a used car consideration.
Hyundai Venue
The variety of used Hyundai Venue cars means there is one available for almost every budget. With Hyundai updating the Venue with features and special editions, there are petrol manual and automatic versions as well as diesels available at attractive prices. The Venue offers a fine balance of style, refinement, efficiency and handling.
Mahindra XUV300
The used Mahindra XUV300 cars are rather sought after thanks to its robust construction and safe feel. The choice of both petrol and diesel with manual or AMT options add to the convenience. The XUV300 offers good space and fuel efficiency as well as a high level of safety. The facelift model was renamed to XUV 300.

Note: The used car prices in the table above are for vehicles from 2019 or later and with a mileage of less than 1 lakh kilometres.
The second hand Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV300 command a higher average price thanks to their popularity, usable features, and number of variants. The Tata Nexon costs the most new but loses out on resale value far more than the other two. The Venue’s lower running costs also are a factor in its popularity despite its higher price in the used car market. The post-facelift used Hyundai Venue cars have even better resale value.
Yearly Rate of Depreciation: Used Tata Nexon vs Hyundai Venue vs Mahindra XUV300
The Hyundai Venue and the Tata Nexon have lower depreciation, losing about 45% after five years compared to the 48% of the Mahindra XUV300. But, out of the three, the XUV300 deviates by holding its value better in the first year. However, from the second year onwards, it is the Hyundai Venue with the upper hand over its two rivals. From the fourth year onwards, the XUV300 loses another 5%, and loses half of its value by its fifth year.
The average rate of depreciation for SUVs is listed below for reference followed by a quick look at the depreciation year on year of the three compact SUV models discussed here.

Tata Nexon
The Tata Nexon has earned a name for itself for its safety rating and long list of features. This compact SUV ages well beyond the second year and retains its resale value quite well even at the fifth year, better than average. Losing up to 45.28% of its value by its fifth year, it holds its value marginally better than average, but loses out to the Venue.

Hyundai Venue
The Hyundai Venue is best known for its advanced features and wide selection of efficient petrol and diesel engines. Apart from the lower running costs, the Venue is also the best of the three compact SUV models here at holding its value, particularly after the second year. This also boosts its resale value in the used car market, and the Venue retains its resale value better compared to the Nexon and XUV300.

Mahindra XUV300
The Mahindra XUV300 is popular for its butch styling and SUV stance. It also offers powerful engine choices as well as manual and automatic transmission options whichever way you look. While its resale value is higher in the first year in comparison, it has a higher rate of depreciation from the following year, losing up to half its value after five years, much higher than average.

The Hyundai Venue holds its value well, particularly after the first year, and retains 44.82% of value after the first year. It has earned a reputation for low cost of ownership, reliability and modern features, which means a used Venue will age well and have a lesser number of problems too. Should you choose to sell your used Hyundai Venue a few years later, it will have a better resale value and command a better price compared to its rivals.
Engine and Transmission Options: Used Tata Nexon vs Hyundai Venue vs Mahindra XUV300
If you are out to buy a used SUV model, all three of these compact SUVs offer a choice of petrol and diesel engines. The Nexon and XUV300 also have manual and AMT variants for both petrol and diesel. The 2023 and later models, including current versions, of these cars use updated engines complying with BS6-phase 2 norms, and are thus more expensive compared to the older ones.
Tata Nexon Engine and Transmission Options

1.5- litre, turbo-diesel, 114/116 bhp, 300 Nm, 6-speed manual/AMT
As of 2020 the Tata Nexon petrol and the Hyundai Venue diesel are equipped with more powerful engines. The Mahindra XUV300 offers a choice of both MPFI and TGDI turbo-petrol engines. The Venue and XUV300 both offer a wide variety of engine and transmission choices, and work out to be more cost effective when it comes to service too.
Maintenance Cost Comparison: Used Tata Nexon vs Hyundai Venue vs Mahindra XUV300
Tata Nexon
The Tata Nexon has a service interval of one year or 15,000 kilometres, compared to the 10,000-kilometre interval of the other two. However, it is also the most expensive to maintain. While it is popular thanks to its home-grown origins and high safety rating, it doesn’t enjoy the reputation of being all that reliable. A routine service will cost you around ₹6,000 to ₹8,000 on average with every third service costing around ₹10,000.
Hyundai Venue
The long list of modern features, high fuel efficiency and low running cost are all traits of Hyundai cars and the Venue checks all those boxes. A scheduled service will cost you between ₹2,000 and ₹4,400 on average depending on what parts need replacement. The fourth service can go up to ₹7,500. Having said that, Hyundai spare parts are reasonably priced and their cars are reliable if maintained well.
Mahindra XUV300
Mahindra’s more compact car models are known for their low running costs and the XUV300 meets expectations as well. A periodic service will cost between ₹2,250 to ₹3,750 but with additional work and parts come additional costs as well. Like most cars, the XUV300 costs more to service every four years or 40,000 kilometres, going up to almost ₹10,000.

In terms of service costs, the Tata Nexon has a service interval of 15,000 kilometres or one year, whereas the Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV300 have an interval of one year or 10,000 kilometres. On an average, the Hyundai Venue is the cheapest to maintain while the Tata Nexon is still the most expensive. All three brands have a wide service network and spare parts are similarly affordable. That said, sticking to the periodic service schedule should help keep your car running well.
When it comes to warranty, the Tata Nexon was earlier offered with a warranty of two years or 75,000 kilometres, extendable to four years, but from 2023, that increased to three years or 1 lakh kilometres, extendable by up to two more years and up to 1,25,000 kilometres, with an additional choice of maintenance contracts to choose from.
The Hyundai Venue, however, is offered with a three-year warranty with unlimited kilometres, extendable by one year or even more. The Mahindra XUV300 has a three-year or 1 lakh kilometre warranty with an option to extend to the “Shield” warranty which enhances resale value further.
It is pertinent to note that used cars also come with a warranty from CARS24. This includes a standard three month warranty and a one year extended warranty available at a nominal cost.
Conclusion
The prices of the used Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV300 paint a picture which bucks the trend of SUVs gaining greater share. While the major used car buying factor remains low maintenance costs, modern features such as a sunroof, phone connectivity and touchscreens are in demand. Thus, the Hyundai Venue holds its value better and also has lower maintenance costs.
All three of these compact SUVs are rated well in terms of crash safety. The Nexon has the highest rating but the two aren’t far behind. The Venue and XUV300 have a more premium cabin finish and nicer ergonomics. The XUV300 and Nexon also offer a diesel engine with an AMT option.
