Tata Motors gained market share in the new car market to close 2024 with 14% making it the country’s third largest car manufacturer. On the other hand, used Tata cars hold about 6% market share in 2024, which is projected to grow in the coming years.
In 2024 used car sales outpaced new car sales, with 13 second hand models being sold for every 10 new cars purchased, as per CARS24’s used car report. Used Tata models like the Tiago, Nexon, Nano, Indica Vista and Tigor make up the top five models in terms of sales.
The Top Five Best Selling Used Tata Cars in 2024
Continuing with the trend of a preference for hatchbacks in the used car market, the Tiago is the best selling used Tata model. While the Nexon is the Indian brand’s most popular used SUV. Despite their age, used Nanos and Indica Vista models are fairly popular in the used car market.
Further, 60% of all pre-owned Tata models were used petrol cars, with 36% preference for diesel showing the appeal of the robust diesel engines the company has produced.

1. Tata Tiago
Launched in 2016, the Tiago is still in its first generation. As part of the Tiago’s evolution over the years, it was facelifted in 2020, and recently in 2025, while an i-CNG model was added in 2022. Used Tata Tiago models captured 24% of the manufacturer’s share in the market.

Engine and Transmission Options
Offered with a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol or CNG engine and a 1.05-litre Revotorq turbo diesel engine. Both were offered with a choice of 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT.
A total 86% of used Tata Tiago buyers preferred the petrol, while 11% chose diesel and 7.5% chose CNG versions. In terms of transmissions, 83% chose the manual gearbox, with 17% uptake for AMT-equipped cars.

2. Tata Nexon
Launched in 2017, the Tata Nexon has since carved out a sizeable following for itself to become one of the best-selling compact SUVs. Total used Nexon sales accounted for 14% of Tata’s demand in the pre-owned market. Based on a heavily revised Indica platform, the Nexon was first facelifted in 2020, followed by a fairly comprehensive facelift in 2023.

Engine and Transmission Options
At launch, the Tata Nexon was offered with a 1.2-litre turbocharged Revotron petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbocharged Revotorq diesel engine. Initially, only a 6-speed manual transmission was offered, with a 6-speed AMT joining the mix later.
Speaking of used Tata Nexon models, buyers showed a 34% preference for diesel Nexons in the used market for its performance and efficiency. Similarly, with a 27% preference for the AMT variants, the Nexon’s automatic options also pulled in sizeable numbers.

3. Tata Nano
The Tata Nano made waves at its launch in 2008, with its goal of providing the feel and safety of a car to the masses with low maintenance costs to boot. It was updated in 2014 with electric power steering, giving rise to the Nano Twist, with the Nano Gen X adding an AMT gearbox in 2015. CNG options were available for the Twist and Gen X. Despite its age and Tata discontinuing the model, used Nanos accounted for 9% of the brand’s sales in 2024.

Engine and Transmission Options
The Tata Nano was offered with a 624cc petrol engine with 33 bhp and the tag of India’s most fuel-efficient car at the time. It was offered with a 4-speed manual transmission, with a 5-speed AMT added later.
As per CARS24 data, 94% of used Tata Nano buyers opted for petrol with few takers for the CNG variants. While a majority of buyers were for the manual gearbox, 18% chose the AMT for its ease of use.

4. Tata Indica Vista
The second-generation Tata Indica was christened the Indica Vista in 2008 and it breathed new life into the decade-old Indica platform. The Vista sold in respectable numbers till its discontinuation in 2018.
Despite its age in 2024, the Indica Vista still commands a 6% used car market share for the brand making it one of the top-selling used Tata hatchbacks.

Over the course of its lifetime, the Indica Vista was offered with a 1.2-litre Safire65 petrol, a 1.4-litre Safire90 petrol, a 1.3-litre turbocharged Quadrajet 90 diesel and 1.3-litre fixed-geometry turbo diesel engine.
Only manual gearboxes were on offer. Diesel models accounted for a massive 78% of used Tata Indica Vista sales in 2024, showing that second hand diesel cars still attract high-usage buyers.

5. Tata Tigor
A compact sedan based on the Tiago hatchback, the Tata Tigor brought chic styling and incredible value to the segment at its launch in 2017. The launch of the 2025 Tata Tigor has seen it gain a refreshed interior with more modern features. The Tigor remains Tata’s only sedan offering.

CARS24 data shows an 80% buyer’s preference for petrol, 12% for diesel and 8% for CNG. An overwhelming 83% of buyers chose the manual transmission in the used Tigor market.

A second hand Tata car can prove to be a worthy companion, as evidenced by the strong numbers the brand commands in the used car market. With the uptick in sales in recent years, one can expect more and more used Tata models to enter the market, making for a wide range of choices for any budget.
